Excess weight during childhood increases the risk for developing coronary artery disease as an adult, according to two studies in the New England Journal of Medicine . The rate of heart disease could be 5%-16% higher by 2035, with more than 100,000 excess cases of heart disease due to higher obesity rates, according to a U. Similarly, Danish researchers followed a cohort of nearly 277,000 children born from 1930 to 1976 and found a higher body-mass index during childhood was associated with an increased risk of heart disease in adulthood, especially in boys. By the time today’s teens are middle age, the rate of heart disease could be 16 percent higher because of the extra pounds they are carrying around today, a U. The two reports in the New England Journal of Medicine may well be underestimating the future health effects of childhood obesity, said Dr. The consequences of that are unprecedented and unknown,” said Ludwig, who was not involved in the research. The researchers found that the more overweight a child was between ages 7 and 13, the greater the risk of heart disease was in adulthood. But for a boy of the same age and height who weighed about 25 pounds more, the risk went up by one-third, to 16 percent. Some of those complications are risk factors for heart disease, which could explain the link between childhood weight and a higher risk of heart disease, the Danish researchers suggest. The object of the study, Speroni said, was to determine whether children can be taught to make "best choices" with respect to activities and the food they consume. Speroni said she has watched a cafeteria line and observed children opt for, say, the "mac and cheese with wheat roll" over the "ham, turkey and cheese deli sandwich," and then walk straight past the fruit, the vegetables and the milk. Better, she suggested, to put out the "best choice" tray – the child can still choose between the two main entrees, but everything else will already be on the tray. We need to teach the children, Speroni said, that the "object of eating is not to satisfy the pleasure of the moment, but to fuel your body with energy, the balanced diet and food it needs so you can enjoy the things you like to do best, to play and learn, to grow your body and to grow your mind. It is sadly ironic that in a global community where so many people, particularly children, are suffering hunger and malnutrition, almost one third of children in Australia are seriously overweight. Overweight children are subjected to ridicule and social isolation and suffer decreased self-esteem and reduced confidence. The pressures and costs these issues will ultimately place on the national hospital and medical systems are transparent and unambiguous. Increasing physical activity at schools, as well as increasing awareness of the importance of exercise at home and controls on tuckshop food are achievable. Read Childhood Obesity
