The media puts out the image that we have to fit a certain mold, but that is not reality. If you want to get technical, it is 25 percent body fat or higher in boys, and 32 percent body fat or higher in girls. If we do not deal with the childhood obesity, as a result we will rely on oxygen, wheel chairs and our generation’s lives will be short. In Brazil we are suggesting to increase fruit trees in the public area and change our country to a large tropical orchard. Read Childhood Obesity

The five children were more severely obese and had numerous weight-related complications — one had evidence of fatty liver, one had high blood pressure, two had gastroesophageal reflux, two had orthopedic problems, three had marked insulin resistance, four had dyslipidemia, and all had emotional problems related to their weight. Today, about one in three children and adolescents is overweight (with a body-mass index, or BMI, in the 85th to 95th percentile for age and sex) or obese (BMI above the 95th percentile), and the proportion approaches one in two in certain minority groups. Future economic losses could mean the difference between solvency and bankruptcy for Medicare, between expanding and shrinking health care coverage, and between investment in and neglect of our social infrastructure, with profound implications for our international competitiveness. Novel approaches that focus on the quality rather than the ratio of macronutrients appear promising, and other areas warrant study, including the effects of sleep deprivation, stress, infectious agents, and endocrine-disrupting environmental toxins on weight. And although broad consensus exists regarding the dietary and lifestyle habits needed to prevent and treat childhood obesity, we lack anything resembling a comprehensive strategy for encouraging children to eat a healthful diet and engage in physical activity. Ludwig is director of the Optimal Weight for Life Program in the Division of Endocrinology, Children’s Hospital Boston, and an associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School — both in Boston. Adding fuel to the claim that childhood obesity is becoming a major public-health threat, a large new study shows a strong link between children’s weight and their risk of developing coronary heart disease in adulthood. Adding credibility to the analysis, the findings were consistent in each time period included in the study — which covered decades before childhood obesity was considered a problem. That doesn’t bode well for modern American children, who tend to be heavier than those in the Danish study, says David Ludwig, a doctor who directs the optimal weight for life program at Children’s Hospital in Boston. Ludwig, the author of a perspective accompanying the Danish study, which warns that the most devastating effects of the childhood-obesity epidemic are yet to come. Jennifer Baker, an epidemiologist at the Institute of Preventive Medicine, Center for Health and Society in Copenhagen and the study’s lead author, said because higher BMI is associated with higher cardiovascular risk throughout the 46-year study period, “this indicates a biological factor underlying the association. In a separate article also published in the medical journal, researchers used a computer model devised by cardiologist Lee Goldman, executive vice president for health and biomedical sciences at Columbia University, to try to predict the impact that overweight adolescents would have on future adult cardiovascular disease. In 2005, The Ontario Medical Association (OMA) called for a restriction on nutrient-poor foods for students while under the care of school boards in order to help curb the rate of childhood obesity. Doctors have also been calling on the provincial government to mandate one hour per day of structured aerobic physical activity and exercise for elementary and secondary school students in order to help reverse this dangerous trend. The report also highlighted the severe and potentially life-threatening consequences of obesity. Obese children face an increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, breathing problems (such as obstructive sleep apnea) and orthopedic complications. Read More
