When it comes to dealing with childhood obesity, the Christmas holiday period may not be a good time for parents to lead by example. However, in a controversial move that may leave some families scratching their heads, dietitians and the Federal Health Minister have welcomed fast food chain McDonald’s participation in the summit. When the chief executive of McDonald’s launched National Diabetes Week several years ago, the head of the AMA (Australian Medical Association) said it was like inviting Dracula to the opening of a blood bank. Now the chief operating officer of McDonald’s, Catriona Nobler, will sit on the expert industry panel of a major childhood obesity summit today. Clare Collins, an Associate Professor at the University of Newcastle and a member of the Dietitians Association of Australia, says companies such as McDonald’s have made steps to improve the quality of their food.
