Soft Drink Says "Sorry" To Videogames - Kotaku Australia- Childhood Obesity News
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
Folks - The ABA statement is from me and I would appreciate you taking the time to understand the context of our statement and the point we were making about the mayor’s ridiculous plan (which is getting lambasted in the national media, by the way). Bottom line is that weren’t bashing video games, but saying it is just as silly to tax retailers who sell soft drink as it would be to tax high tech companies who make video games, computers and search engines — all important industries in SF area. If you read our full statement, it attacks the mayor’s flawed strategy and logic of singling out one food or beverage as the cause for a complex problem of childhood obesity - thus deserving of unique taxation. If one were to follow this FLAWED LOGIC (emphasis added here for purpose of this blog entry), the mayor also should tax all the high-tech companies in San Francisco for their culpability in contributing to childhood obesity through their video games, computer games, and Internet search engines that keep kids glued to their chairs instead of outside playing and burning calories. Politicians, and many parents, are afraid to do the hard work of actually teaching their kids how to balance all foods and all activities into their lives, including drinking a good, tasty soft drink while you’re playing Halo. Thin Santa Claus strikes blow against obesity - Telegraph.co.uk(Childhood Obesity News)

A health-conscious Santa Claus is refusing to wear a pillow under his suit because he fears it may promote child obesity. Bill Winton, a slim 80-year-old, said if children viewed chubby Father Christmas as a role model they could grow up thinking that it was alright to be overweight. He decided to remove his extra padding after noticing the young children sitting on his knee had become heavier over the years. He said he was proud of the fact that he had a healthy diet and did not consume sugary drinks. Read Childhood Obesity

Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon has told a national summit in Sydney on childhood obesity that the Howard Government did not provide enough leadership on the issue. Ms Roxon says the blame game between the state and federal governments over hospitals and other acute areas in health, meant preventative strategies were not the priority. She says a shift is needed, especially with one in four children overweight in Australia. Childhood Obesity News - McDonald's at the table for childhood obesity summit - ABC Online
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
When it comes to dealing with childhood obesity, the Christmas holiday period may not be a good time for parents to lead by example. However, in a controversial move that may leave some families scratching their heads, dietitians and the Federal Health Minister have welcomed fast food chain McDonald’s participation in the summit. When the chief executive of McDonald’s launched National Diabetes Week several years ago, the head of the AMA (Australian Medical Association) said it was like inviting Dracula to the opening of a blood bank. Now the chief operating officer of McDonald’s, Catriona Nobler, will sit on the expert industry panel of a major childhood obesity summit today. Clare Collins, an Associate Professor at the University of Newcastle and a member of the Dietitians Association of Australia, says companies such as McDonald’s have made steps to improve the quality of their food.
