She placed the plate of fruit and juice on my desk recognizing my defiance and said, “If you want to be healthy and strong, you have to eat healthy and strong foods. With the rise of childhood obesity in record numbers over the past three years, it’s time to breathe life back into that phrase and to truly take to heart the importance of being aware of what we consume day to day. Take steps to introduce you children to all aspects of cooking and the fundamentals of navigating the kitchen by getting them involved in the process. Give your children the ability to be empowered and the option to make the best choice in deciding where and what to eat. Of course what we often don’t realize is that 1) We pass that behavior on to our kid and 2) We often, in an emotional rush and dislike of the process of shopping, choose what’s easiest and not what is best. Chewing properly is the only way to grind up your food so that it is small enough to allow the rest of your digestive system to extract as many of the available nutrients as possible. Led by the University of Bremen, Bremen Institute of Prevention Research and Social Medicine (BIPS), the IDEFICS-Study (’Identification and prevention of dietary- and lifestyle-induced health effects in children and infants’) will also develop, implement and assess specific activities for neutralising the obesity epidemic. The difference between the IDEFICS study and past studies, says Professor Ahrens, is that for the first time in Europe it will be possible to assess and compare the factors putting children at risk of obesity in nine European states. Professor Ahrens underlines that children will be the biggest benefactors from the study and the Intervention Programme, ‘in the sense that healthy eating, sports activities and relaxation are embedded in their lifestyle. Seventeen of the 23 partners represent research institutes and universities, and six are SMEs, whose ‘experience ranges from media expertise in science transfer and its use on the Internet and TV, via the development of new technology (accelerometers) and the application of innovative laboratory methods’, he says. She said of the increasing number of children with Type 2 diabetes who are patients at the clinic, all are obese. However, if consuming a lot of sweets causes obesity, that condition can lead to Type 2 diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Caused by a problem with the body’s immune system, it usually starts when the child is younger than 10, and can begin as early as 18 months of age, Juliano said. However, anyone who is obese, regardless of age, is at risk for getting Type 2, according to the the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control (CDC). During the past three decades, the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for preschool children aged 2 to 5 years and adolescents aged 12 to 19 years, and it has more than tripled for children aged 6 to 11 years, the CDC states. A child with Type 2 may feel just fine, but hyperglycemia is a strain on the body and can cause problems later on, according to the ADA. Read Childhood Obesity

The research, led by University of Leicester Professor of Primary Care Diabetes and Vascular Medicine Kamlesh Khunti, was conducted against the background of knowledge that escalating rates of childhood obesity are likely to have an impact on the incidence of coronary heart disease and type-2 diabetes. The government has pledged £372m to tackle the child obesity issue in the UK, including £75m for a campaign to “empower parents to make changes to their children’s diet and increase levels of physical activity”. The government said it will not be a campaign telling people how to raise their children, but a “movement” to which parents, commercial partners and the third sector can contribute. A healthy food code of good practice is also to be developed by the government, in conjunction with the food and drink industry, with the aim of developing a single, simple method of labelling foods that are high in fat, salt and sugar. The start of Ofcom’s review of restrictions on the advertising of junk food to children will also be brought forward to the summer, the government announced today. The government also announced that a working group will be set up in conjunction with the entertainment and technology industries to “ensure that they continue to develop tools to allow parents to manage the time that their children spend watching TV or playing sedentary games, online and much more widely”. The UK has the highest number of sexually active children aged 15 and under in western Europe, according to an MP who wants to give parents the right to know before their child has an abortion or receives contraception.
