IONIA - Children in Ionia County and across the state of Michigan are heavier than ever, and it's a problem that has local experts concerned with more than just expanding wastelines. Richard Kustasz of the Portland Family Health Center, who mentioned that data shows Michigan is routinely one of the most overweight states in the nation. After countless unsuccessful attempts at dieting through adulthood, Avila said two weight-related knee surgeries in the past decade - and a little inspiration from the reality TV show The Biggest Loser - Avila said it was time for a change. It isn’t cool to take lunch from home, I do believe a salad bar is offered at the the high school but although my child likes salads those offered at the school are declined. Yes you can send in lunches but I think if the schools offered healthier food this would begin to help with this problem and then it is up to the parents to help when they are at home.
