Charity to tackle child obesity - Huddersfield Examiner- Topic: Childhood Obesity News

The heart charity, which has revealed that almost three quarters of children do not think fast food is a treat, launched its hard-hitting Food4Thought campaign to combat growing obesity problems in today’s youngsters. With the use of the internet, the scheme aims to encourage 11-13 year olds to think about the food they eat and be more aware of junk food marketing tricks. What’s more, the charity is calling for the Government to ban all marketing of junk food to youngsters, including on food and drink packaging, and on the internet, after new figures released showed that an astonishing 92% of seven to 14-year-olds in Yorkshire and the Humber do not think chips or fries are a treat. As part of the campaign the British Heart Foundation will also be issuing innovative teaching packs to 2,500 schools throughout the UK in a bid to help kids see through junk food marketing messages. (Childhood Obesity News) Childhood obesity: An expanding problem in Ionia - Sentinel-Standard
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
IONIA - Children in Ionia County and across the state of Michigan are heavier than ever, and it's a problem that has local experts concerned with more than just expanding wastelines. Richard Kustasz of the Portland Family Health Center, who mentioned that data shows Michigan is routinely one of the most overweight states in the nation. After countless unsuccessful attempts at dieting through adulthood, Avila said two weight-related knee surgeries in the past decade - and a little inspiration from the reality TV show The Biggest Loser - Avila said it was time for a change. It isn’t cool to take lunch from home, I do believe a salad bar is offered at the the high school but although my child likes salads those offered at the school are declined. Yes you can send in lunches but I think if the schools offered healthier food this would begin to help with this problem and then it is up to the parents to help when they are at home. Consent forms were sent to the parents of all 8,500 children who participated in DI last year, according to Costello, who expects between 4,000 and 4,500 of these to participate in the research. Confidence level will be assessed according to the MacArthur Scale of Subjective Social Status, in which parents and children will be asked to place themselves on a ladder, the top of the ladder representing the people they think are the best. While being active and busy is a huge part of the health of DI children, the relationships they form with other children and with adults contributes to their self-esteem and confidence, Wayne said. Can you then, in a couple of years, create a structure to tell parents ‘the more you’re involved with your kids, the better their health is going to be? Read Childhood Obesity

(Childhood Obesity News) Obesity rise affects more kids in reddish than Bramhall - Stockport Express
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
MORE children in Reddish are obese than their peers in Bramhall, according to statistics in a childhood obesity report. Children in reception classes and Year 6 were monitored as part of childhood obesity data for 2006/7. The Stockport Primary Care Trust report says there are many factors that have led to a rise in obesity levels, including family structure, modes of transportation, home entertainment, the availability of processed junk foods and overprotection of children. But the PCT has developed an Obesity Action Plan that will aim to change the environment into one that promotes physical activity, a healthier diet, and support individuals and families. Headteacher at North Reddish Junior School Colin Manning said he did not understand why there was such a difference in statistics for Reddish North and Bramhall South. Read Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity: A lifetime of danger - USA Today- Topic: Childhood Obesity News
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
Experts have known for years that hauling around extra pounds takes a huge toll on children’s health, putting them at an increased risk for type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and other health problems. About one-third of children and teens in the USA — about 25 million children — are overweight or on the brink of becoming so, government data show. Obesity in childhood can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes in both childhood and adulthood, and it can lead to sleep apnea in children, says William Dietz of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The heart association is working to make sure that children get enough physical education and more nutritious foods in schools, Jones says. Read Childhood Obesity

McDonald's UK CEO Blames Video Games for Childhood Obesity - Slashdot- Childhood Obesity News
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
We’re front and centre of the diet piece of the debate and, as a large business with a big influence, it is a responsibility that we accept as a leader in our sector. In the summer all through my chidhood, I’d make myself a sandwich before anyone else was up, and be out in the woods until evening - or else, later on, drop down river in my boat on the outgoing tide and come back in on the next. When I was growing up we had our Nintendos and Segas and Ataris and Intellivisions and Apple IIe computers, but we only played around with those for a few hours, and then we’d go outside and play baseball or football or street hockey, or merely ride our bikes around the neighborhood for a few more hours. While what McDonald’s UK douche says is true, it’s also very true that the “Fast Food Nation” (sponsored heartily by communities like the one I live in where the little guy is ignored while the big box and chain restaurants are encouraged to thrive by the Council) is also killing us. You’re right, when we were kids (I’m in my mid-30s), I played in ditches, played soccer, got beat-up by the neighborhood bully, rode bikes on the trails and make “jumps”, played lots of hide and go seek or kick the can, we ran home from school, ran down the street, just being kids. Stem child obesity, task force urges city - Baltimore Sun(Childhood Obesity News)
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
Baltimore should improve access to fresh produce and recreational activities in low-income neighborhoods to stem childhood obesity, according to a City Council task force report released yesterday. The report recommends creating health zones in which city officials would work with schools, food stores and churches in three- to four-block areas to ensure that healthy food is available and that children have safe places to be physically active. From 1980 to 2004, the prevalence of overweight children ages 6 to 11 more than doubled, according to the report. Overweight people are at a higher risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke and several types of cancer. Much of the report focuses on what the city school system can do to improve health, including requiring playgrounds at all elementary schools and renegotiating contracts with food vendors to provide healthier food choices. Welch said the council will hold a hearing on the report at 5 p. Read Childhood Obesity

Finally, we will take steps to block users who violate any of our posting standards, terms of use or privacy policies or any other policies governing this site. The problem was that 40 percent of youths ages 6 to 11 whose parents described them as “about the right weight” were actually obese. Parental concern about a child’s obesity was lowest in the Midwest (13 percent) and highest in the Northeast (37 percent). Experts say the study underscores the disconnect between public awareness of childhood obesity as a public health problem and the ability to recognize it in one’s children. In recent years some pediatricians have called on doctors to take a more direct approach with parents in addressing the issue, which some physicians have avoided mentioning because they feared offending families. At the same time, physicians across the state are struggling to afford staff salaries and necessary equipment as reimbursements continue to decline. The second study found that as children between the ages of 7 and 13 gained even small amounts of excess weight, their risk for heart disease as adults increased. By increasing awareness among parents of young children and informing everyone about the lifelong importance of healthy lifestyles, we can put the brakes on obesity at a young age. I was able to amend the law to place a specific priority on childhood obesity in the Food Stamp program, and ensure the government does not encourage unhealthy diets. At the minimum, we should make certain our children have the best chance at a long and productive life by eating right and exercising.
