Childhood Obesity News - Study confirms genetic link to childhood obesity - London Free Press

These foods are very appealing to young people and very often lead to an overconsumption of calories that are empty of other nutrients, unfortunately to the detriment of healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables. There is no argument that this omnipresence of high-caloric foods in the diet can lead to weight gain, especially at a time when children burn a lot less energy than before with the presence of television, computers and video games. The presence of genes that make some children vulnerable to obesity is another illustration of the importance of adopting a healthy diet early, rich in plant products, and in which the consumption of high-caloric products is reduced to a minimum. By introducing our children to the pleasures of healthy eating, the diversity of cooking styles and the wealth of cultures associated with them, we pass on to them values that will make them happier and keep them healthier. Obesity is one of the greatest health risks for children in the United States and, unfortunately, it’s on the rise. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of obese children in America has tripled since 1980. Rush plans to use the grant to pilot an 18-month test program, “A Combined Biomedical and Psychosocial Approach to Weight Management,” led by Cathy Lynn Joyce, MD, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics. In collaboration with an interdisciplinary team, families with children whose weights are rising above the ideal body weight will be assisted in their goal of preventing childhood obesity. The program will help physicians to better understand the complicated factors that lead to childhood obesity and to develop a concrete protocol for effective behavioral change focusing on the child and their family. Rush is the first medical center to implement a formalized program utilizing an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals coupled with direct family involvement. Read Childhood Obesity

Obesity is currently thought to affect more than 64 per cent of the US’s adult population and 16 per cent of children, and has been repeatedly linked with an increased risk of other health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. The research could increase pressure on the food industry to reduce salt content in a wide range of foods, and adds to previous studies linking dietary salt intake to an increase fluid consumption in adults ( Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases , Vol. The researchers, from St George’s, University of London, analysed data from the Great British National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) - anationally representative sample of more than 2,000 people between four and 18. A forum to promote discussion and awareness of childhood obesity proved that children’s waistbands are not the only thing expanding — now parental, governmental and administrative efforts to combat the problem are too. About 200 people attended the American Association for the Advancement of Science event at the Boston Marriott Copley Place Sunday to gain a better understanding of obesity and childhood nutrition and discuss solutions to the national problem. By contrast, children who got the least sleep had a 92 percent higher change of being overweight or obese than children who slept enough, said the study published in the journal Obesity. The risk declined with more sleep,”" said Youfa Wang, a senior author of the study. Some research recommends that children under five years old sleep 11 hours or more a day, while children age five to 10 should get 10 or more hours of sleep, and children older than 10 should sleep at least nine hours.
