Kids are getting all kinds of ailments because they eat badly and don’t run around in the fresh air nearly enough. The solutions are at the same time simple, yet hard to make happen. Kids are getting things more commonly found in adults like diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and conditions that haven’t even been studied yet. Romano said, āRecently, we’re seeing something called fatty liver, where children are getting fatty infiltrations of the liver. In the battle to get kids to eat better and run more, Dr. Playgrounds stand silent in cold, winter weather, but Matz says itās wrong that state funding cuts have led to less school exercise, in favor of high impact class work like math and reading. Most of us remember as children the thrill of summer breaks, warm evenings filled with nonstop play and refusing our parents’ calls to come home if we were in a heated game of dodge ball. Unfortunately, physical play has given way to sedentary lifestyles and poor diets in our children, with the number of overweight and obese youngsters doubling in one generation, and continuing to rise. Besides the explosion of technology cutting down the incentives for children to be physically active, the big barrier to playing outside is safety in our modern world. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, daily participation in physical education programs among adolescents has dropped from 42 percent in 1991 to 33 percent in 2005. Rather than buying them the latest electronic gadgets or enrolling them in too many extracurricular programs, let the children play outside everyday; give them a ball and let them come up with their own games. In 2004, the departments for culture, media and sport; education and skills (now children, schools and families); and health agreed a joint public service agreement “to halt by 2010 the year on year increase in obesity among children under 11″ as part of a wider obesity strategy. These include a national programme to weigh four to five and 10-11 year-olds; measures to improve nutrition in schools; the so-called “healthy schools programme” which seeks to promote healthy eating, emotional health and wellbeing as well as sport; traffic light food labelling; the five-aday fruit and vegetable campaign; making routes to school safer to promote walking/cycling; revamping playgrounds; and restrictions on junk food advertising. While the government claims the new target is more ambitious in that it aims to reduce the numbers of overweight children, others are more sceptical, pointing out that reducing obesity and overweight to 2000 levels is a damning indictment of hundreds of thousands of children. How many of the five hours will actually consist of activity remains to be seen ā” although 86% of children have two hours of physical education a week, ahead of the 2008 target of 85%, pupils are not always getting the full two hours of physical education because this includes the time to transfer to the sporting venue and get changed. A British study reveals that obesity in children is not only because of lack of exercise and wrong dietary habits, but there is a strong genetic influence amongst other factors that lead to childhood obesity. Researchers concluded “targeting the family may be vital for obesity prevention in the earliest years, but longer-term weight control will require a combination of individual engagement and society-wide efforts to modify the environment, especially for children at high genetic risk”.
