The Government will introduce a childhood health and fitness program already considered a success in France, where children grow up in a land world-renowned for a love of fine, rich cuisine. All this talk about childhood obesity is making it very difficult to get my 11yesr old boy to eat a reasonable amount of food because he is concerned about being considered fat. With the introduction of weighing kids at school he and other kids like him are going to be even less inclined to eat a healthy amount of food. I don't have a big garden, but it is enough for them to want to be in — no fancy plants or neat rocks for display. Read Childhood Obesity

By comparing the results between identical twins (who share all their genes) and fraternal twins (who share half), the authors calculated that BMI in the sample was 77 percent heritable. Of the remainder, “shared environment” (growing up in the same household) accounted for 10 percent, and “non-shared environment” (for example, being the eldest kid instead of the youngest) accounted for 13 percent. After all, siblings with the same parents, being served the same food and being given the same options for exercise doesn’t make them any more similar in BMI than would be expected from their genetic similarity. As the authors point out, “the dramatic rise in childhood obesity in the past 15 years is clearly due to changes in the environment, because genes have not altered. Read Childhood Obesity

Johnson fervently maintains, which incidentally forms the basis of his book, that the root cause of obesity and chronic diseases related to obesity for both children and adults is the low-grade silent inflammation associated with extra abdominal fat, along with low levels of antioxidans and phytonutrients. It is his contention that it is essential to address the root cause which he breaks down into oxidative stress, insulin resistance and the low-grade chronic inflammation that are triggered by many factors such as unhealthy foods as well as environmental causes as exposure to pesticides, industrial pollutants, and toxins. Johnson points out in his introduction, that the book is intended for parents who want to help their children (5-12 years old) to develop healthy eating habits in order to improve the quality of their weight, body fat and health, and particularly targeting young children who might be at risk. Johnson covers in fewer than two hundred pages where we learn about the strategies for reducing obesity and inflammation, what is silent inflammation, medical consequences of obesity, food essentials, becoming knowledgeable and proactive pertaining to the foods we eat, recognizing food diversity, vitamins, minerals and essential fats, how to draw up a healthy shopping list, planning meals with your child, breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner. Fearing a backlash from parents, Georgia lawmakers have stripped an anti-obesity bill of a key provision that would have forced students to climb on the scale for twice-yearly “weigh-ins. But critics argue that a person’s BMI “score” is a simplistic way of look at overall health and worried that it would add to the stigma faced by overweight children. The details of that test would be determined by the state Department of Education, but the use of BMI would be banned. The BMI mandate passed in the state Senate over the objections of some GOP lawmakers who labeled it “nanny state legislation. Karen Young, who runs a clinic for obese children and is a pediatrics professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, said critics who worry that the test will stigmatize overweight children are missing the point. McGuire said he was “lucky enough to get the grant” in cooperation with Nancy Bogle of the DeKalb County Health Department. According to the editor of CATCH Magazine, “CATCH is the most studied childhood health promotion program in North America, with extensive evaluation in more than 80 scientific journals. For more than 15 years, the evidence has shown that CATCH helps to change behaviors, sustain them, and reduce the rate of child obesity. According to Steven Kelder, co-director of the Michael and Susan Dell Center for Advancement of Healthy Living, “Worldwide, from developing to industrialized countries, the obesity epidemic is causing communities and schools to change their approaches to child health. Because Cortland has a very small gym, teachers are supposed to do some physical activities with kids in the classroom, and McGuire goes into the classrooms at times. Read Childhood Obesity

With nary a fluffernutter in sight, school nutrition advocates concerned over the alarming rise childhood obesity in Massachusetts in recent years huddled in the State House on Monday to push a bill regulating snacks in schools. Koutoujian told the News Service the bill, which was reported favorably last November by the Health Care Financing Committee, has a better chance of moving forward this time because it is backed by a federal report on nutrition. The bill (H 4376) is designed to set nutritional guidelines on a la carte menus and food sold in vending machines in schools, said Terry Mason, deputy director at the Massachusetts Public Health Association. Morris, a pediatric physician for 25 years, said the number of extremely obese children is on the rise, as are the numbers of families with multiple obese children. Under the proposal, the Department of Public Health would set guidelines for training school nurses in treatment for eating disorders and children at-risk for and diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. As part of the program, the Pinellas County Health Department received a $300,000 grant that will be used to help Largo’s first- through third-graders battle obesity and become more aware of the value of healthy living. The two-year grant is funded by Children in Balance, an initiative of the Friedman School of Nutrition at Tufts University in Boston that researches nutrition and physical activity for children. For example, there will be signs posted throughout the Largo schools stressing the importance of choosing the correct types of foods. Be Active North Carolina and its partners believe the system is so effective at fighting childhood obesity and other problems related to sedentary lifestyles that it should be available in all North Carolina public schools and community sites. This gives students a wider variety of opportunities to be active than they would find in a normal school physical education setting, allowing them the chance to find an activity they truly enjoy and increasing their chances of living an active lifestyle. Generally, the study found that the program provides a more efficient use of physical education class time than traditional methods; that youth were more active during Be Active HOPS classes versus traditional physical education classes, while girls and those who are overweight benefit even more; and that the program is also cost-effective. Riley Fields, Director of Community Relations for the Carolina Panthers, said the team has provided resources to help put the system in 32 Charlotte-Mecklenburg middle schools and will continue supporting the program in the future.
