With nary a fluffernutter in sight, school nutrition advocates concerned over the alarming rise childhood obesity in Massachusetts in recent years huddled in the State House on Monday to push a bill regulating snacks in schools. Koutoujian told the News Service the bill, which was reported favorably last November by the Health Care Financing Committee, has a better chance of moving forward this time because it is backed by a federal report on nutrition. The bill (H 4376) is designed to set nutritional guidelines on a la carte menus and food sold in vending machines in schools, said Terry Mason, deputy director at the Massachusetts Public Health Association. Morris, a pediatric physician for 25 years, said the number of extremely obese children is on the rise, as are the numbers of families with multiple obese children. Under the proposal, the Department of Public Health would set guidelines for training school nurses in treatment for eating disorders and children at-risk for and diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
