Censorship built on junk arguments - Spiked- Topic: Childhood Obesity News

The IOTF’s rationale rests upon a series of influential recent reports by the American Psychological Association, the US Institute of Medicine, the UK Food Standards Agency, and the UK television regulator, Ofcom. If you peek behind the regulatory curtain, however, the claims about the causal influences of food advertising on children’s diets and weight share a central and definitive flaw in their understanding of what counts as demonstrating causality. In fact, to the surprise of many, TV viewing has not increased during the period of the obesity ‘epidemic’, and some observers suggest that it has not changed for children and adolescents for the past 40 years. Peter Kyle of the University of Lancaster examined the impact of food advertising on food consumption and found no evidence to support the popular myth that advertising will increase market size. Other studies into the effect of advertising of such items as breakfast cereals and biscuits, both frequently cited as bogeymen in the childhood obesity epidemic, have concluded that advertising did not affect market size in any general way or to any material extent. Bob Eagle and Tim Ambler looked at the impact of advertising on chocolate consumption in five European countries in order to test the claim that a reduction in advertising would reduce consumption. A day before the world celebrated International Consumers’ Day on March 15 under the theme, “No to childhood obesity”, the League for the Consumers’ Defence in Benin organised a meeting to focus on obesity among children in the country. According to Muriel Hans Moevi, a nurse at a communal dispensary and speaker at the meeting, children are consuming very high quantities of candy and fatty foods, and if nothing is done in 10 to 15 years, they will suffer from obesity and be at risk of chronic cardiac or coronary diseases. Ms Moevi said local people’s habit of having a cup or bowl of porridge with at least five sugar cubes for breakfast predisposes them to accumulating fat in the body. According to Consumers International, at least 22 million children below the age of five in the world are overweight or obese. Romain Houehou, president of the League for the Consumer’s Protection in Benin, said a code regulating trade in fatty foods is being drawn up by Consumers International. Benin’s consumers league is being involved in the process and intends to promote the code at the national level so that the government can implement it. Read Childhood Obesity

These health behaviors speak directly to the business bottom line through decreased productivity and escalating costs to insure our employees, to say nothing about what they imply for the health and well-being of our workers and their families. If we don’t rethink the family, educational, health care and social systems that engage our children and don’t come to see how they must all be integrated in addressing this epidemic, we’ll simply produce more of the same alarming statistics. There is a healthy recognition in Lansing that, historically, our educational, family, health care and public health systems have not been well-integrated, nor have they sufficiently emphasized prevention and promoted healthy behaviors in our children. This effort is bringing together decision makers from government, the public and private sectors, school districts, health care and nonprofit organizations to help the state develop a strategic policy agenda to permanently reverse the childhood obesity trends in our state. As a member of one of the Healthy Kids, Healthy Michigan workgroups, I have been impressed with the determination of all the participants to do the hard thinking and debating that will lead to sound and realizable policy recommendations in the near future. Starting with the Michigan Childhood Immunization Registry - now known as the Michigan Care Improvement Registry - and more recently with the Michigan Disease Surveillance System, the Michigan Department of Community Health has made a sustained commitment to use technology to assess how we are doing on preventive care, understand patterns of health risk and target interventions to address diseases that threaten our population. It has been estimated that the annual cost burden of obesity-related conditions to society and the health industry is $122. This includes preventive, diagnostic, and treatment services for obesity-related illnesses and conditions (diabetes, heart disease, hypertension) as well as wages lost due to these illnesses. Approximately 25-30 percent of adult obesity cases begin with childhood obesity, and the incidence of childhood obesity is steadily growing. We can pay now by investing in our children or pay later when we start paying their medical bills. Unfortunately, for some children, we’ll begin paying those bills before they even reach adulthood. Clinton started this race last year with 3 bikers and 12 runners, but it’s gained so much attention those numbers doubled this year. They ran or biked and on the way, they stopped at all 13 public schools in Cabot and talked to kids. Clinton says she wanted to celebrate her 35th birthday last year, by focusing not on her, but on kids. We have so many kids that used to be reserved for the elderly and now we’re seeing them in our children. That’s why Clinton is organizing a One “K” Run for children on Saturday, Mar. Olivia Campbell and Mia Roberts may not know it but they’re learning healthy choices for the rest of their lives. They start with whole grain bread, followed by freshly sliced pears and whole grain pretzels. Important enough that JCPS students will have whole grain pretzels and pears on their lunch menu next year. What matters most is what the students think and if they would actually eat the food. Currently eight JCPS schools are part of the Tap Into Fitness program with more joining from year to year. Read Childhood Obesity

West Elementary making strides to fight childhood obesity - West Liberty Index(Childhood Obesity News)
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
Last week West Elementary students spent time learning about healthy eating and, according to sources at the school, many students took what they learned home with them and began to teach their parents. The United States has the highest rate of childhood obesity and this has been steadily increasing for the past 30 years due, in part, to larger meal portions and less exercise. Bravo to the teachers at West Elementary for spending the time to instill healthy eating habits in their students. If nobody takes the time to talk to a child or a parent about the right foods for their bodies, chances are, they’ll go with the fastest, tastiest meal and that is rarely the healthiest meal. In addition to activities with the students, the PTO also hosted a night for the parents. So, again, bravo to West Elementary for recognizing, not only the educational needs of the children in this community but their health-related needs, as well. Read Childhood Obesity
