According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, surveys indicate that - beginning around 1980 - obesity rates started rising sharply. A survey conducted between 1976-80 revealed that 15 percent of adults aged 20-74 were obese; in the 2003-04 survey, obesity rates climbed to 32. For many families, consistently purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables might be difficult; still, paying a little more now may help to avoid dangerous health issues later in life. According to the CDC, 10-14 percent of adults living in Iowa were obese in 1990; in 1995, those rates rose to 15-19 percent; in 2006, 25-29 percent of adults in our state were obese. Childhood obesity can often lead to adult obesity, which in turn leads to more serious health issues later on in life. But health experts believe more needs to be done to boost the city’s poor health record and they have called on the Scottish Government to increase the number of training places for primary PE teachers. Parents must shove them out the door when its dry & bright and teachers need to find ways to get kids back to the ways those in their 30’s, 40’s and above played - when TV’s, mobile phones and other handheld DVD players weren’t so widely available. I think I read that in East Ayrshire a couple of years ago that they had Activity Motivators who went around the schools and over a six week period gotthe children interested and at the same time trained the school staff. While overall life expectancy increased more than seven years for men and more than six years for women from 1960 to 2000 (to 74 and 80), the good news didn’t reach all parts of the country. Four percent of men and almost one in five women there experienced either declines or stagnation in life expectancy beginning in the 1980s . The male-female discrepancy is likely due to the fact that women did not start smoking in large numbers until the 1970s. Here in Australia, data from the most recent nationally representative survey of schoolchildren, the 2004 NSW Schools Physical Activity and Nutrition Survey of 5400 children, indicates that 8% of boys and 6% of girls are obese, with a further 17% of both overweight. Clearly this is an opportunity to ensure the health and wellbeing of our little citizens, and arguably the family doctor is well-placed to perform this check — with, hopefully, knowledge of the child’s family context. Given that at least one in four of these children will be above their healthiest weight, I would hope that GPs or practice nurses would be provided with the training, allied health staff and remuneration for the time required to be spent discussing healthy weight and healthy lifestyle issues with these families. This is not even to touch on the debates that one can be fat and fit, and that assessing a child’s or young person’s overweight status requires a whole family approach and significant skill. The program’s goal is to get kids to bring their newfound food knowledge home to their families and implement what they’ve learned. The Scottish Government has announced plans to spend £6 million in the fight against childhood obesity. The money will be spent on programmes aimed at helping at least 20,000 overweight children, said health secretary Nicola Sturgeon.
