Everyone is looking for someone or something to blame for the trend of increasing weight during the last 20 years - fast food, soft drinks, Saturday morning food commercials and school vending machines. The first home computers were affordable; moms entered the workforce; physical education and home economics were phased out of school; video games took off and there were lots of channel choices on television. Only 25 percent of American students attend physical education classes or participate in a sport on any given day, and 40 percent of teens watch three or more hours of television on an average school day. When you add computer, iPod or cell phone time, it brings the total to 5 1/2 sedentary hours per day in addition to the hours they spend sitting in school. As a dietitian, I spend a lot of time trying to convince people all foods can fit into a healthful diet and there are no “good” or “bad” foods. Read Childhood Obesity
