Health advocates fighting childhood obesity in Fayette County are working to make a state-mandated letter describing students’ risk factors somewhat easier for parents to swallow. The letter was sent during the fall 2007 semester and included students’ heights and weights, and whether they were at risk of obesity and related ailments. According to “In Step with Pennsylvania’s Communities,” a publication of Steps to a HealthierPA, children will have shorter lives than their parents for the first time in modern history because of obesity. In the past 20 years, the percentage of overweight children in America doubled, Steps to a HealthierPA reported. Even parents who take their children for regularly scheduled medical check-ups may not glean enough information to reduce obesity, said Paul Bacharach, president and chief executive officer of Uniontown Hospital.
