Research has shown childhood obesity can lead to a lifetime of bad eating habits and health problems. According to the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, the number of overweight and obese children and teens tripled between 1976 and 2004, from 5 to 13. The goal is to reduce childhood obesity through healthier nutritional choices, increasing activity and decreasing “screen” (television and computer) time, said Nancy Smith, director of community services at Indiana Regional Medical Center. The medical center took the lead in the community, starting four-week educational programs for parents in some county school districts. Speakers include Frederick Trowbridge, medical epidemiologist and former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s control division of nutrition and physical activity; Ninon Richartz, program manager for Shaping America’s Youth; Diane Wagoner and Leigh Ann Harvey, IUP food and nutrition faculty members; Barbara Mayfield, a Purdue University registered dietitian; and Jim DeLine, community coordinator at the Michael and Susan Dell Center for Advancement of Healthy Living, University of Texas School of Public Health. The program is free and open to the public, Fryling said. Read Childhood Obesity

A study conducted at the University of Adelaide in Australia shows obese children have a higher risk of upper airway obstruction which can lead to Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS). OSAS is a sleep-related breathing disorder that causes your body to stop breathing when tissue in the back of the throat collapses, blocking the airway. Researchers conducted a sleep test on 190 children between four and 12 years of age, classifying them as infrequent snorers, habitual snorers or with OSAS. Doctors say OSAS is a very serious disorder that increases the risk of stroke, diabetes and heart disease and is most common in pre-schoolers. Read Childhood Obesity

The findings, published in April’s Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, are based on mothers’ reports of their babies’ sleep habits and TV viewing, and direct measures of the children’s height, weight and skinfold thickness. They found 586 of the children slept an average of 12 or more hours a day and 329 of the children slept less than that. Adding TV to the picture, 17 percent of those who slept less than 12 hours a day and watched two or more hours of television a day were obese by the time they were 3. The researchers took into account other risk factors for obesity, including TV viewing, and still found the children who slept fewer than 12 hours a day had a doubled risk of being obese at age 3 than the other children. Pat Prinz of the University of Washington, who wasn’t involved in the study, said parents who rely on day care should make sure their toddlers have plenty of time to run, jump and play. As a result, the industry is changing how youth and cultures around the world think about their health and what they eat, Eric Schlosser, author of “Fast Food Nation,” said Tuesday night during his address at the Victory Theatre. The frequent Rolling Stone contributor said the trend of increased health problems in children has continued to rise in the past 30 yearsa trend that closely correlates with the rise of the fast food industry. Many of the ideas of Ray Kroc, McDonald’s founder, were taken from Walt Disney, who perfected the art of selling to children, Schlosser said. He said the impact of imprinting on children has led to increased consumption of foods with high fat and sugar contents, which has led to an increase in obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and even heart attacks. Schlosser used the example of an obese 10-year-old, who was suffering from cardiovascular disease similar to that of a 45-year-old smoker. Read Childhood Obesity

Combined, a walk to and from the grocery store in the morning, some jumping jacks in the afternoon and a game of âSimon Saysâ in the evening could add up to a dayâs worth of exercise. But to be effective, we must also work with these centers to identify their vulnerabilities and determine appropriate responses like increased government investment and more intensified training and support for the staff that are inevitably impacted by a daily exposure to violence. As we seek to elevate the role that our neighborhood community health centers play in our cityâs response to escalating violence, we must be sure that we are promoting and protecting the interests of workers on the frontlines. Thatâs why taking inventory of the needs of community health centers must include the identification of resources to strengthen and maintain the physical and mental well-beings of staff. Bill Dietz said that to control childhood obesity, ‘we need grass-roots engagement, and it is important to link the school and the community. A nationally renowned health specialist who spoke at the University of Texas on Thursday emphasized a holistic approach to controlling childhood obesity, including community outreach efforts and nutrition education in schools and homes. Dietz spoke at the second annual Michael and Susan Dell Lectureship in Child Health about the importance of policy-level changes to challenge obesity. He highlighted community-based interventions, exemplified by the Paso del Norte Health Foundation, which encourages physical activity and balanced nutrition plans for the residents of El Paso while providing grants for school-based initiatives that educate young students and staff about health. He also discussed the success Arkansas schools have had in fighting obesity by requiring 30 minutes of daily physical activity for children and education for cafeteria workers, among other policies. The message about the dangers of obesity must be used to create a social movement, he said. Read Childhood Obesity

Health advocates fighting childhood obesity in Fayette County are working to make a state-mandated letter describing students’ risk factors somewhat easier for parents to swallow. The letter was sent during the fall 2007 semester and included students’ heights and weights, and whether they were at risk of obesity and related ailments. According to “In Step with Pennsylvania’s Communities,” a publication of Steps to a HealthierPA, children will have shorter lives than their parents for the first time in modern history because of obesity. In the past 20 years, the percentage of overweight children in America doubled, Steps to a HealthierPA reported. Even parents who take their children for regularly scheduled medical check-ups may not glean enough information to reduce obesity, said Paul Bacharach, president and chief executive officer of Uniontown Hospital.
