Associate Professor of Child Health Research at the University of Sydney, Jenny O’Dea, first collected measurements and data from almost 5,000 school children in 2000. She says when a second round of measurements was taken in 2006, there had been very little overall growth in childhood obesity. Children from disadvantaged areas appeared to be most worse off when it comes to obesity, according to data. But the finding, based on survey data gathered from 1999 to 2006 by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and published in Wednesday’s issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association , was greeted with guarded optimism. It is not clear if the lull in childhood weight gain is permanent or even if it is the result of public anti-obesity efforts to limit junk food and increase physical activity in schools. The data come from thousands of children who have taken part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys — compiled by the National Center for Health Statistics at the C. The researchers are trying to replicate the program in rural areas in other parts of the country. As part of the program, school officials in the past four years have tracked the weight and height of 475,000 children, and those numbers show that average body mass index rates in Arkansas have held steady. While the latest data suggest the obesity epidemic may have been contained, researchers say the real question is whether it is possible to reverse the obesity trend among American schoolchildren. Get your children involved by letting them help you plan and prepare healthy meals, and take them along when you go grocery shopping, so they can learn how to make good food choices. If you, as a parent, eat well and exercise regularly and incorporate healthy habits into your family’s daily life, you’re modeling a healthy lifestyle for your children that could last into adulthood. Talk to your kids about the importance of eating well and being active, but make it a family affair that will become second nature for both you and your children. Most of all, let your children know you love them - no matter what their weight - and that you want to help your child be happy and healthy. Read Childhood Obesity

ScienceDaily (May 27, 2008) — There was no significant increase in the prevalence of obese children and teens in the U. Height and weight measurements were obtained from 8,165 children and adolescents as part of the 2003-2004 and 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which are nationally representative surveys of the U. Because no significant differences were found between 2003-2004 and 2005-2006, these 2 two-year survey periods were combined to make detailed population estimates for the prevalence of high BMI. After years of unremittingly bad news about increasing rates of pediatric obesity, Ogden et al report no increase in prevalence between 1999-2000 and 2005-2006. Nicklas, DrPH, Professor of Pediatrics at the Baylor College of Medicine reported that the prevalence of obesity (body weight more than 20% greater than recommend for height and sex) in . Paul Campos’ Rocky Mountain News column of May 21, “A $10,000 ‘obesity’ challenge,”attacking a series of articles about obesity in The Washington Post, irresponsibly suggests that a growing concern about obesity as a significant health problem is exaggerated or, worse, “completely false. As chairman of the board of the Denver-based American Society of Bariatric Physicians, the leading professional organization providing physicians and other health professionals with education in the medical (nonsurgical) management of weight loss and related medical conditions, I can assure Campos and his readers that he is absolutely wrong. Members of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians work with people of all ages to improve health by reducing body fat using an individualized approach crafted for the patient that might include dietary modification, exercise prescription, psychological support and medication, if necessary. The authors of those articles are in good company with other Campos “alarmists” about an obesity epidemic, including physicians, scientists and other experts at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, UCLA/RAND, Carnegie Mellon University, Harvard University, the University of Colorado, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, and national physician and health organizations including the American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, American College of Physicians and the American Diabetes Association. The conference this week, co-hosted by the Pennsylvania Nutrition Education Network and the Pennsylvania Hunger Action Center, examined nutrition initiatives in the state and the challenges of feeding underserved communities in a time of global rising food prices. The Tuesday evening keynote address by Wootan was an indictment of an industry that uses gimmicks like cartoon characters to sell sugary snacks and has invaded public schools with infomercials and company branding, as well as the ubiquitous vending machines selling candy and sodas. In 2005, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies set forth guidelines stating âIndustry should develop and strictly adhere to marketing and advertising guidelines that minimize the risk of obesity in children and youth. Health policy organizations such as the IOM and the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) as well as a host of other concerned decision makers did not have much luck convincing the industry to voluntarily change its ways. In a partnership that unites the Ad Council (the makers of campaigns including Smokey the Bear and the famous Crying Indian), the Department of Health and Human Services, qubo (the children’s TV channel launched in 2006), the U. The ads, which have appeared leading up to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, feature Johnson, the beach volleyball team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh and runner Sanya Richards. Unlike other campaigns with now iconic figures, like Smokey the Bear and the Crying Indian, the combating obesity effort attempts to get the message out through several channels and different messages. The site allows viewers to see the ads, read daily health tips and play a pac-man style game where the Looney Tunes Tasmanian Devil runs around a board, gaining speed when he eats healthy foods like fruit and losing points when he eats hot dogs or Sundaes all while avoiding Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig. The groups involved in the campaign understand that it’s hard to change unhealthy habits, especially when two parents are often working outside of the house to support their families. The Ad Council is working on another new ad it hopes to launch later this fall and is looking closely at how well the Can Your Food Do That campaign worked. Read Childhood Obesity

We want to limit television and videogame time, but we’re unsure whether time spent on the computer is to be considered the same as time spent in front of the television, seeing as there are no food advertisements. The Journal of Pediatrics, in its April 2008 issue, reported on children between 7 and 12, examining the relative influences of physical activity and screen time (television/computer/videogames). A total of 709 children participated, and their activity and screen time were compared with the standards of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The March 2008 issue of Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine looked at overweight children between the ages of 4 and 7 who logged at least 14 hours per week watching television and playing computer games. Almost one in five children under seven is overweight and more than seven percent are obese, according to a study of the Chinese National Task Force on Childhood Obesity, presented at the sidelines of the annual meeting of the World Health Organisation. What tipped the scales were social changes that came along with the transformation of the country since it opened up economically at the end of the 1970s. The adoption of Western couch-potato style of life in the cities is the problem, as parents feed their children with fat and sweet food, according to the scientist. Ding said it was hard in the beginning getting support to conduct the study, the first of which was done in 1986, and later in 1996 and 2006, each time showing worsening results. Since then, the Chinese authorities have acknowledged the problem as a health challenge, but resolving the problem of malnutrition “remains the number one problem for the government”, said Ding.
