There are smiles and hugs when the scale shows the exercise and fat-free foods have paid off. But other times there are tears, like when 16-year-old Meagan Beckham realized she had gained weight despite hours on the treadmill and days of salads at this weight-loss boarding school. Wellspring Academy, formerly the Academy of the Sierras, became the country’s first boarding school devoted to tackling the problem of childhood obesity when it opened in California in 2004. Wellspring Academy of the Carolinas, which opened last fall on the grounds of an out-of-season summer camp in Brevard, N. About 25 middle and high school students who are seriously overweight spend at least four months here learning how to eat right, exercise more and fight the genetics that have placed them among the millions of children who struggle with obesity.
