In a partnership that unites the Ad Council (the makers of campaigns including Smokey the Bear and the famous Crying Indian), the Department of Health and Human Services, qubo (the children’s TV channel launched in 2006), the U. The ads, which have appeared leading up to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, feature Johnson, the beach volleyball team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh and runner Sanya Richards. Unlike other campaigns with now iconic figures, like Smokey the Bear and the Crying Indian, the combating obesity effort attempts to get the message out through several channels and different messages. The site allows viewers to see the ads, read daily health tips and play a pac-man style game where the Looney Tunes Tasmanian Devil runs around a board, gaining speed when he eats healthy foods like fruit and losing points when he eats hot dogs or Sundaes all while avoiding Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig. The groups involved in the campaign understand that it’s hard to change unhealthy habits, especially when two parents are often working outside of the house to support their families. The Ad Council is working on another new ad it hopes to launch later this fall and is looking closely at how well the Can Your Food Do That campaign worked. Read Childhood Obesity
