Exercise 'doesn't prevent childhood obesity' - Telegraph.co.uk(Childhood Obesity News)

A study carried out on around 300 schoolchildren in Plymouth found that the amount of exercise a child does is not correlate with their Body Mass Index, a calculation of their height and weight used to measure if they are a healthy weight or not. Co-author Prof Terry Wilkin said the research has shown that there is a ten fold difference in the amount of daily activity children do, that the amount they do does not change over time and that children can be very active but still have a high BMI. He said the fact girls do less exercise than boys may just mean they are programmed that way and it was unfair that society recognises that amongst adult athletes, in that women are not as fast as men in most elite sports, but we do not recognise that amongst male and female children. The findings are published online in the Archives of Disease in Childhood and tracked the long-term health of 300 children from 54 different schools around Plymouth who were all five years old. They had their physical activity levels measured for one week at the age of five, six, seven and eight by wearing a device around the waist and measurements were taken of their insulin resistance which can be a pre-cursor to diabetes, blood fat and cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Some children did as little as ten minutes per day at the recommended intensity of the equivalent of walking at four miles per hour which should increasing the breathing rate and cause them to break into a gentle sweat. Classes are out for children across the country, but the fight to boost fitness and curb fat among America’s youth doesn’t end with the school year, researchers and health advocates say. Groups ranging from the American Heart Association to the National Association for Sport & Physical Education succeeded in efforts in Florida and Oklahoma this year to increase the time children spend in physical education classes. About 9 million (or 16 percent) of children between the ages of 6 and 19 are overweight under the standard used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention three times the percentage in 1980. A study of 5,380 kindergartners and first-graders published last year in the American Journal of Public Health found that students gained more weight during the summer than they did the rest of the year. Paul Houston, executive director of the American Association of School Administrators, said shrinking school budgets and pressure to boost reading and math scores have reduced the class time available for PE programs. NY, NY (06/27/2008; 1214)(readMedia)– The Community Health Care Association of New York State (CHCANYS) and the Children’s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM) have teamed with the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) We Can! City Council President Christine Quinn and City Council Majority Leader and Chair of the Health Committee Joel Rivera are expected to attend. Over the past three decades, the nationwide childhood obesity rate has more than tripled for children aged 6-11 and adolescents aged 12-19 years, and has increased among children younger than 5 years. In a population-based sample, approximately 60 percent of obese children aged 5 to 10 years had at least one cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor and 25 percent had two or more CVD risk factors. Taken together, these and other consequences of overweight and obesity may reduce overall adult life expectancy, potentially reversing the improved life expectancy trend achieved over the past century. This summer members of Curves, a fitness center for women, can bring their daughters between the ages of 8-18 to work out with them for no additional charge. At the end of the summer the team with the most points will win prizes, Gesick said. Childhood obesity campaign launched - Irish Times(Childhood Obesity News)
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
The research, undertaken by the Health Service Executive, safefood and the Health Promotion Agency in Northern Ireland, was unveiled at the launch of a major campaign by Minister for Health Promotion and Food Safety Mary Wallace aimed at tackling the problem of obesity in Ireland. Entitled Little Steps Go a Long Way, the campaign is a major awareness initiative - involving television, radio advertising and a website - designed to show that small changes to physical activity and food habits can have a big impact on health. Described as a “one of the most serious public health challenges” by the World Health Organization, the problem of obesity is at epidemic proportions among adults and children across the island of Ireland and looks set to continue growing at a rate of 1 per cent every year. In 2005 it was estimated that about 2,000 premature deaths in the Republic were attributed to obesity and that these deaths could be costing the State as much as €4 billion a year. Director of Human Health and Nutrition at safefood Dr Cliodhna Foley Nolan said children’s eating habits mirror those of their parents and children of normal-weight parents are more likely to have a healthy weight. Almost 20 per cent of families eat their meals in front of the television more than four times a week and there is evidence to suggest that eating meals in front of the TV is associated with poorer eating habits,” she said. Similar clinics may be opened across the country, to combat a growing threat to children’s health, says public health directorate head of nutrition Dr Khairiya Moosa. She also warned parents not to let children gorge themselves during the summer school break, saying many children suffered weight surges during the long holiday. Forty-eight children have already been put under treatment for obesity at the new National Bank of Bahrain Obesity and Health Centre, Arad. Children are particularly vulnerable during the summer school break, when their routine is disrupted and rules eased, she said. Read Childhood Obesity

Childhood Obesity News - Board focuses on childhood obesity - Lake County Record-Bee

Susan Jen, director of the Health Leadership Network of Lake County, told the board she hopes to bring the Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) program to Lake County’s schools in the fall. Also in the works are plans to promote physical fitness by developing a “community recreation district” that will include Lakeport and Clearlake, and to open school grounds to parents and students after hours for sports, dance or yoga, among other activities. In other business, the board approved four leases for property in Lucerne’s Harbor Village, adjacent to Lucerne Harbor Park, to be turned into an artist colony in an effort to draw tourism to Lucerne. The Lake County Public Services Department has worked to refurbish the four cottages during the past two years and still has some “finishing touches” to make, according to Lake County Redevelopment Agency Deputy Director Eric Seely, including sidewalk, landscaping and an irrigation system.
