Childhood obesity rates in the state have more than doubled since 1980, and the highly regarded Institute of Medicine's Report on Preventing Childhood Obesity recommends the current situation be treated with the urgency of an infectious disease epidemic. Sharon Hillidge, resource teacher with the Chula Vista Elementary School District, has designed two programs to combat the crisis of childhood obesity. Exercise the Dream, a daylong workshop in partnership with the Olympic Training Center, exposes students to Olympic-caliber athletes and teaches self-motivating techniques.
