A study has found that more than a quarter of Bethel Elementary School’s 466 students are obese, and among fifth-grade boys the figure is 55%. As a result, Bethel’s school nurse organized workshops that covered portion control, nutrition, avoiding excessive snacking, and healthy cooking. My school conducted these so often that it became a form of torture, especially during the last months of school before summer break. I guess those things aren’t done here or otherwise lawmakers wouldn’t have passed a bill that requires elementary schools to have 150 minutes of gym a week. All the physical exercise conducted at school won’t help if a child has poor eating habits once they are at home. But my mother didn’t find it necessary to stop purchasing these wonderful treats; she left it up to me to control. A fine attitude for an adult, but not a very good one for a child who is still learing about self-control. Giving children a choice whether to exercise or not is a bad idea. Read Childhood Obesity

Reviewing those guidelines, most parents quickly find some simple way to eliminate a few hundred calories from their child’s diet, such as by cutting back on juice, changing to low-fat milk, and/or cutting back on snacks. If you remember that 1 pound of fat is equal to about 3500 calories, then those 200 calories a day will add up to an extra pound of weight gain in about 17 or 18 days. If your child is still hungry at mealtime, you can usually give more, but that should usually be limited to vegetables and other low fat side dishes, especially if your is overweight. For some kids it is, but for kids who need to lose a lot of weight or who were gaining 2 or 3 pounds a month, they may need to cut back even more to meet their weight loss goals . There’s a “glimmer of hope” in the recent findings of researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that the childhood obesity epidemic may be leveling off. But even if the incidence doesn’t rise further, it leaves us with a huge public health problem in the making, for it still means that one in three children is overweight. Health officials warn that if we don’t get serious about confronting that problem, the toll it will take — in heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, orthopedic problems — will be enormous. The public will pay — in the tax bill for Medicaid (because the incidence of obesity is highest among the poor) and for government workers’ health insurance and in their own insurance premiums. But until that talk is followed up with real action, to help overweight kids trim down and prevent others from starting down that path, we won’t make a dent in the problem. Jones Middle School in Hampton is showing the way, with a program that replaces the old calisthenics-and-kickballs routine with a revved-up cardio workout, with lots of kid appeal. The body mass index of all secondary school children is to be calculated in an ongoing survey as part of the Healthy Eating Lifestyle Plan. Dr Anthony Xuereb, who is heading the survey, said the aim of the survey was not for direct action for children found to be obese, but the collection of data for action on a national scale. A much needed boost needs to be given to PE and sports in schools -it is shameful how extra-curricular activites have been rendered absolete due to lack of support from the Education Department.
