Future of program battling childhood obesity uncertain - Tonganoxie Mirror- Topic: Childhood Obesity News

The future of a program to help curb childhood obesity in the Tonganoxie Elementary School is still up in the air. Surveys from the 24 schools that participated in Red Shoelace Project have been tabulated and schools are waiting to see if they will be able to order another box of shoelaces for their students next year. Joella Mehrhof, a physical education professor at Emporia State University, who started the program, tabulated the survey results and said there was great participation from the schools. Even after the program was finished, the survey reported that 62 percent of the schools said at least half of their students continued to wear the shoelaces as a visual reminder to stay physically active. Even if the Red Shoelace Project doesnât continue for the 2008-2009 fourth-graders, both Kissinger and TES principal Tammie George said they want to continue helping kids be more active and encourage parents to participate in activities, both physical and academic, with their kids. Britain's first live-in school for fat pupils - guardian.co.uk(Childhood Obesity News)

Britain’s finest boarding school exclusively for overweight and obese teenagers is to open in the Lake District. The school will open in three years and will be run by the American company Wellspring Academies. Ryan Craig, president of Wellspring and an adviser to the US Department of Education, said the company was surprised by the extent of childhood obesity in Britain, as well as levels of interest in the school from parents and children. Britain has seen a dramatic increase in childhood obesity, leaving the government struggling to meet its target of halting the rise among under-11s by 2010. However, experts have questioned the need for specialist boarding schools and say there have been no studies into the long-term results. Melvyn Roffe, chair of the Boarding Schools’ Association, which represents 550 state and independent boarding schools in Britain, is also sceptical. Read Childhood Obesity

TWO VIEWS: Don't bloat bureaucracy to crusade against expanded … - Fresno Bee (subscription)- Childhood Obesity News

WASHINGTON — The Washington Post recently featured a weeklong, front-page series devoted to the pernicious effects of the increase it perceived in children’s obesity. The article, headlined "Inertia at the Top," relied on critics who believe that efforts to stop this perceived crisis "suffered particularly from inadequate direction and dollars at the federal level. Keith of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and others outlines evidence that many factors, such as decreased sleep time, decreased smoking, changes in distribution of ethnicity and age, increased ages of mothers at the time they give birth and other shifts in how we live our lives are likely explanations for part of the statistical phenomenon indicating average weight gains. The campaign for anti-obesity legislation amounts to an effort to control the food people eat through federal propaganda, legislation and regulations relating to eating hamburgers, steaks or desserts. Proponents of lifestyle changes at the behest of the federal government want a host of extensive programs, with their attendant resource needs and bureaucracies. Read Childhood Obesity

Are children reaching puberty earlier? - Miramichi Leader(Childhood Obesity News)

Recent studies have shown that children are reaching puberty at younger and younger ages, and researchers are starting to see links between this trend and other societal ills such as ubiquitous pollution and sedentary lifestyles. Of course, sedentary lifestyles are also linked to childhood obesity, a condition that often continues-along with the many health problems that can accompany it-into adulthood. A study by the non-profit Obesity Society came up with a slightly higher figure-20 percent-with the percentages higher for Hispanic, African-American and Native American children. According to Erin Barnes, writing in E - The Environmental Magazine, a study comparing the body mass index of Danish and American girls found that the former group hit puberty a full year later than the latter even though their weights were in the same range. Some researchers believe that the preponderance of synthetic chemicals in more developed societies are interfering with human endocrine development and essentially "tricking" kids’ bodies into going through puberty prematurely. Also, precocious puberty in girls has been linked to breast cancer, as well as higher rates of drug abuse, violence, unintended pregnancies, problems in school and mental health issues. Medicating Childhood Obesity - New York Times(Childhood Obesity News)

The resulting flurry of controversy has centered — correctly — on the lack of proof that taking cholesterol-lowering drugs in youth actually prevents cardiovascular events later in life, as well as on the dearth of long-term safety data regarding such treatments in children. We need to look to our environment for the root cause of this sudden change in the shape of the human species, which in evolutionary terms is occurring in an instant. Limiting the idleness at home in front of screens in not enough; governments should partner with the gaming, TV, computer industry to find creative uses of new and existing technologies to stimulate families’ (not only children’s) physical activity. In Consults, an informal panel of doctors and medical scientists will take turns answering readers’ questions and writing about research in their fields " how it’s likely to affect the care of patients and to expand our knowledge of human health and disease. A coalition of health, sport and education groups has called for urgent government action to address childhood obesity in Western Australia. The Children’s Physical Activity Coalition (CPAC) has launched a Charter for Active Kids, which outlines 10 solutions to the problem, including a minimum of 30 minutes exercise each day, better footpaths and cycleways in the community and top training for sport teachers and coaches. The Chairman of CPAC, Trevor Shilton, says just under a quarter of West Australian children are overweight or obese. He says there needs to be a shift from talking about the problem to actively addressing it. The Education Minister Mark McGowan says the Government is already doing all it can for school children. Mom's diabetes tied to early diabetes in offspring - Reuters India- Topic: Childhood Obesity News
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Babies who are exposed to mom’s diabetes and obesity while in the womb are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes in adolescence, according to new research. To prevent “youth-onset” type 2 diabetes, “we may need to take a life course approach, targeting, in addition to childhood obesity, the increasing number of women with pregnancies complicated by obesity and diabetes,” researchers conclude. The adjusted odds for type 2 diabetes was roughly 7-fold higher with exposure to maternal diabetes and more than 3-fold higher with exposure to maternal overweight/obesity. Dabelea and colleagues estimate that 47 percent of youth-onset type 2 diabetes can be attributed to prenatal (before birth) exposure to maternal diabetes and obesity. The association between offspring diabetes and maternal obesity was attenuated after accounting for childhood BMI, indicating, the researchers say, that maternal obesity increases the probability of childhood obesity, which in turn heightens the risk of diabetes.
