Leptin levels fall when people lose weight, causing them to have a more emotional response to food , as well as physiological changes that make it easy to put weight back on. Losing weight, quitting smoking, taking a daily aspirin and lowering cholesterol levels are all healthy actions that, when taken by people across the United States, could lower the incidence of heart attacks by 36 percent and strokes by 20 percent in the next decade, according to a report in the journal Circulation. A researcher from the University of Michigan warns that we won’t have seen the full impact of childhood obesity for another 10 years or so, when all those overweight kids turn into young adults with diabetes . Finally, yesterday we told you about a proposal by the American Academy of Pediatrics that kids should be tested for cholesterol at younger ages and, if necessary, treated with statin drugs as early as age eight. Now doctors on the other side of the treatment spectrum are speaking out , saying there’s no evidence that treating cholesterol in kids will keep them from having heart problems as adults, and no one knows what would happen to someone on these drugs during development and for 50 or more years of their life.
