Childhood Obesity News - Supporting the fight against childhood obesity - Chicago Tribune

Your editorial in the Sunday, July 13 edition of the Tribune entitled ” Kids and Statins ” is right on the mark. This is the time to move forward and actually do something to prevent the problem of childhood obesity and all of the health problems associated with it. Donne Trotter has introduced a bill (SB 2858) in the General Assembly to ban trans fats in foods served in public school cafeterias. I encourage citizens interested in doing something concrete about this issue to contact their state representatives to urge them to support this bill. Read Childhood Obesity

Obesity is everyone’s problem - Talk Radio News Service- Topic: Childhood Obesity News

Thomas Harkin (D-Iowa), presided over the hearing and said that the childhood obesity epidemic is one of the most urgent threats to American children. He also said that nearly one out of every three American children are obese or are at risk of becoming obese and children are increasingly being diagnosed with type 2, âadult-onsetâ diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Dodd said that childhood obesity is a problem that âaffects all of us,â and âweâre all going to be paying the bill. She explained that there is no doubt that obesity in youth, along with its associated medical conditions, is the major health challenge of this century, and more needs to be done to combat it. Margaret Grey, dean and professor of the Yale School of Nursing, said that this obesity epidemic in youth threatens not only the future of children with chronic diseases and a decreased lifetime, but the epidemic is multi-faceted and will ultimately affect the workforce and thus the economy. She also said that this generation of youth cannot survive if Congress continues to pay for the care of their heart attacks, but not for the intensive behavioral care that it will take to reverse the epidemic. Kids' Obesity May Lead to Epidemic of Adult Diabetes - Washington Post- Topic: Childhood Obesity News
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
TUESDAY, July 8 (HealthDay News) — The current childhood obesity epidemic in the United States may lead to large numbers of young adults developing type 2 diabetes in the future, along with serious diabetes-related health complications, warns a University of Michigan researcher. The longer a person has diabetes, the more likely he or she is to develop serious complications such as kidney failure and blindness, Lee noted. That means that young adults with type 2 diabetes are much more likely to develop such complications during their lifetime than older people with the disease. More needs to be done to fight childhood obesity, she urged in an article in the July issue of the journalArchives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine. But it spends very little for the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity to stave off the onset of type 2 diabetes,” Lee said. Read Childhood Obesity

Jeff Reinartz: Parents share blame for childhood obesity crisis - Post-Bulletin- Topic: Childhood Obesity News
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
One thing I’ve noticed is there’s always blame pointed in one direction or another, but rarely do I see it placed where it actually belongs, so I’m here to weigh in on exactly where I believe that is. We blame high fructose corn syrup, we blame fast food restaurants, we blame video games and we blame schools that have vending machines right outside the door of the classroom where they teach health classes. Somewhere along the way my wife and I stopped taking the family to fast food restaurants and started cooking recipes found in places like magazines and The Food Network. Sure, our kids probably think their mother and I are the biggest squares on the planet for denying them the junk they see in the cupboards at some other kids’ homes, but while we may seem lame now, we believe we’re fostering an approach toward healthful living that they will carry into adulthood. Nibbles: Food diaries for weight loss, plus childhood obesity and … - CalorieLab Calorie Counter News(Childhood Obesity News)

Leptin levels fall when people lose weight, causing them to have a more emotional response to food , as well as physiological changes that make it easy to put weight back on. Losing weight, quitting smoking, taking a daily aspirin and lowering cholesterol levels are all healthy actions that, when taken by people across the United States, could lower the incidence of heart attacks by 36 percent and strokes by 20 percent in the next decade, according to a report in the journal Circulation. A researcher from the University of Michigan warns that we won’t have seen the full impact of childhood obesity for another 10 years or so, when all those overweight kids turn into young adults with diabetes . Finally, yesterday we told you about a proposal by the American Academy of Pediatrics that kids should be tested for cholesterol at younger ages and, if necessary, treated with statin drugs as early as age eight. Now doctors on the other side of the treatment spectrum are speaking out , saying there’s no evidence that treating cholesterol in kids will keep them from having heart problems as adults, and no one knows what would happen to someone on these drugs during development and for 50 or more years of their life. So if you keep your food diary in a format that’s easy to search, copy, and paste (as in an outline program on your PC), it’s just a matter of copying meals from previous days and tweaking them. (Childhood Obesity News) New Guidelines Improve School Nutrition, Reduce Childhood Obesity - eMaxHealth.com
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
The guidelines were developed by the Missouri Council for Activity and Nutrition (MoCAN), a group that includes the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, the University of Missouri Extension and other organizations involved in health-related issues. The revised guidelines add a fourth category, the exemplary level, as a higher standard for school nutrition. For example, the intermediate level requires fresh, canned, dried or frozen fruits and vegetables to be served at least three days a week, while the exemplary level requires fresh fruits and vegetables to be served daily. Each nutrition level recognizes that differences exist in the resources available to school districts for their nutrition programs and offers recommendations for steps schools can take to continue progress in improving school nutrition. Federal law requires school districts to establish wellness committees to address nutrition guidelines, physical activity, nutrition education and other school-based activities that contribute to the health of students. MoCAN will review the public comments on the revised nutrition guidelines in August and plans to release final recommendations in September. Read Childhood Obesity
