According to Erin Barnes, writing in E - The Environmental Magazine, a study comparing the body mass index of Danish and American girls found that the former group hit puberty a full year later than the latter even though their weights were in the same range. Many experts say that the issue is being overblown, however, that there is no scientific evidence that the bulbs cause headaches and that a kind of hysteria has grown out of a small number of anecdotal reports. When replacing an incandescent bulb with a CFL, pay attention to the lumens, which indicate the amount of light a bulb gives out (watts measure the energy use of a bulb, not the light generated). Although gel hand sanitizers have proven in tests to reduce gastrointestinal illnesses and the spread of contagions compared to ordinary soap and water, their high alcohol content can be poisonous to children who ingest them. The findings revealed that those families who used hand sanitizers experienced a 59 percent reduction in gastrointestinal illnesses and that the increased use of sanitizers correlated to a decreased spread of contagions in general. The down side of the gel/alcohol products is their danger as poison, especially for young children who may ingest the gel by licking it off their hands or eating it directly out of dispensers. The figures — from the pharmacy plans Express Scripts and Medco Health Solutions, and the marketing company Verispan — indicate that hundreds of thousands of children are given medications to treat Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and acid reflux. The data, which the companies either disclosed publicly in recent months or provided at the request of The New York Times , show that the idea of children eventually being put on adult medicines — heightened recently by a controversial recommendation from a national group of pediatricians — is already happening. While some of the increases in the three analyses are dramatic, doctors emphasize that prescriptions of these drugs to children still represent less than 1 percent of their sales. Doctors and some financial analysts have said that less-dramatic increases in cholesterol drugs compared with some other medications — seen in all three analyses — reflect a wariness by some doctors about using the drugs in children. Researchers from the University of Florida, noted that chronic, repeated ear infections can damage a nerve in the middle ear that controls taste sensations. The study suggests that prompt diagnosis and treatment of middle ear infections — one of the most common childhood conditions requiring medical attention — may help to prevent obesity in some people. In research presented today at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in Philadelphia, Linda Bartoshuk, who led the study, said that middle-ear infections, also known as otitis media, are becoming more common in children. The researchers found that those with a history of ear infections were more likely to report a higher, more intense preference for fatty foods than others and were twice as likely to be obese. More research was needed to identify the percentage of children with ear infections who might be vulnerable to obesity, how much nerve damage must occur before obesity begins, and how frequently the damage must occur, she added. PRWeb, a leader in online news and press release distribution, has been used by more than 40,000 organizations of all sizes to increase the visibility of their news, improve their search engine rankings and drive traffic to their Web site. New York, NY and Beijing, China ( PRWEB ) August 21, 2008 — As the saturation of Americans who are overweight is projected to reach nearly 100 percent by 2040, and with 30 to 40 percent of today's children projected to develop diet-related diabetes in their lifetimes, leading child obesity advocates denounce Michael Phelps' endorsement of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes Cereal, which was quickly followed by his acceptance as being named a McDonald's Ambassador . As a role model and Olympic hero to America's children, Michael Phelps–and all athletes and celebrities–are asked to reconsider any connection to substances suspected as agents of obesity including sugary cereals, soft drinks, and other foods with refined carbohydrates, saturated fats, transfats, and high fructose corn syrup. CIOF believes that celebrities should think twice before choosing to endorse or encourage the consumption of any product which is inherently unhealthful to children, especially if that product is correlated to obesity, diabetes, and a myriad of dangerous conditions. In this era of escalating child obesity and diabetes, the last association Michael Phelps wants is that of 'junk food pusher'," said MeMe Roth of National Action Against Obesity (NAAO) and the Children's International Obesity Foundation. National Action Against Obesity and the Children's International Obesity Foundation implore Michael Phelps, and all celebrities and athletes, to reject offers to push more sugar, fat, and hazardous calories onto America's kids. A doubling and tripling of the number of obese children and adolescents in the past 20 to 30 years had not been matched by the resources to deal with the problem, said Shirley Alexander from the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. The causes of obesity were "multi-factorial", including genetics, but the majority of cases were caused by environment and lifestyle, Dr Alexander said.
