A study by the Central Valley Health Policy Institute at California State University, Fresno found the percentage of overweight and obese adults in the region exceeded the statewide average and was four times that of the national initiative, Healthy People 2010, measure. The study found that 65% of adults, ages 18 to 64, and 63% of Valley residents 65 and older were overweight and obese, compared with 56. The harsh reality is that we have become a society on the go, where home-cooked meals are disappearing, and many individuals and families have turned to fast-food restaurants to satisfy their hunger needs. California’s new trans fat law and a current menu labeling bill have great potential in stemming the region’s and state’s obesity epidemic and can help turn the tide for children who face what we call “older diseases” (obesity, asthma, diabetes). The program has brought together statewide and community partners to improve access to healthy, affordable foods and safe physical activity environments in Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced, San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Tulare counties. As the regional program coordinator, I encourage youth and adults to voice their concerns about the challenges of healthy food access and barriers to physical activity. Read Childhood Obesity

But it’s not the case that parents are aware their children are overweight and simply turning a blind eye, experts say the problem stems from the fact that parents often don’t recognise that their kids are obese. The fact that the ‘fat reports’ could alert parents to the reality that their child is overweight could be a vital move, says Paul Sacher, a paediatric dietician at the Childhood Nutrition Research Centre in London. He admits that some children do have to work harder at keeping to a healthy weight, but stresses that often the biggest hurdle they have to overcome is establishing a different lifestyle from that of their unhealthy, and often over-weight parents. She says many of the problems with childhood obesity are due to a lack of understanding and education about the effects of food on weight, energy, and the emotions, as well as health. Without the constancy of school and, even, the bland predictability of school lunches, summer looms as three months of unending temptation, fueled by advertising promoting sugar-laden snacks. Weight specialists at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, one of the nation’s top pediatric medical centers, said they are seeing evidence that skyrocketing food prices and concerns about the safety of fruits and vegetables have made it harder to serve children healthy meals. They found that during the summer between kindergarten and first grade, the youngsters’ body mass index increased twice as fast as during the school year. The rise, reported last year in the American Journal of Public Health, was especially steep for African-American and Hispanic children, as well as those already overweight at the start of kindergarten. The lazy months of summer can also reverse progress achieved during the school year, according to a study from the University of Wisconsin. Their report in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine last year found that when overweight middle-schoolers went on summer vacation, advances made during the school year in cardiovascular fitness, insulin levels, and body composition were negated, stolen apparently by summer’s lack of discipline, specialists said. There needs to be a significant change in the British lifestyle in order to fight growing childhood obesity rates, experts warn. At present a third of children in the UK are already overweight or obese, and without action this could rise to 25 per cent of children by 2050. Mr Fry suggests that a balance of healthy eating and exercise habits is all that is required to maintain physical wellbeing. According to NHS statistics, in 2006, 24 per cent of adults (aged 16 or over) in England were classified as being obese. These are not necessarily the views of kiddicare. Read Childhood Obesity

Outdoor and environmental educators across the nation are ramping up pressure on Congress and their state lawmakers to add funding for nature learning. The effort dubbed “No Child Left Inside” could mean millions more for environmental education — and a major windfall for nonprofits hoping for more federal help getting kids outside. The resolution, which awaits a vote in the House, would send money to nonprofits and state departments of education for outdoor education aimed at kids who now spend more time in front of computer screens, video games and televisions than playing outside. Osborn is one of a dozen or so kids on a week-long outdoor camp run by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, a nonprofit group that works to clean up the nation’s largest estuary. Though Sarbanes is a freshman lawmaker, and he concedes there’s not much time left before Congress’ terms ends to steer the resolution through to passage, he said he’s optimistic his proposal will clear at the least the House before returning next term.
