Starting out as an overweight child makes it much more likely that person will be overweight as an adult, Galson said, noting that about 80 percent of kids who are overweight at the age of eight to 10 will still be overweight at 25. He says parents who are worried about their children should check with the child’s doctor to see if the child’s weight is healthy (and you may have to bring it up; doctors often don’t talk about kids being overweight without prompting from the parents), reduce sedentary behavior, increase physical activity and improve what the child and the family as a whole are eating because “it’s enormously important” to set a good example for kids, Galson said. Of course the Surgeon General isn’t going it alone when it comes to trying to convince parents and kids to maintain a healthy weight. The government sponsors public service announcements with the theme Be a Player to encourage kids to get physical activity and show them that it’s actually fun. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides grants for state-focused nutrition and physical activity programs, which have so far been started in 27 states, and the Food and Drug Administration has information on interpreting food labels for tweens and has an office of minority health that focuses on getting health information to members of minority groups. D — A dramatic rise in the number of North Dakota children with Type 2 diabetes — a form of diabetes normally seen in adults — provides more evidence of a link between the disease and childhood obesity, experts say. The likely connection between an increase in obesity and Type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents has come to light only in the past decade, and officials still are working to compile nationwide trend data and study the best ways to treat youth with Type 2. The NIH and CDC are funding a study on the rates of Type 2 diabetes in children, and another national study is looking at the effects of changes in food service and physical education at 42 middle schools around the country. BATON ROUGE Louisiana children are perhaps the fourth most obese and overweight in the nation because they get little physical activity at home or in school, says a study released this week by LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center. The study Louisiana’s Report Card on Physical Activity and Health for Children and Youth will be the main topic of discussion today during a statewide childhood obesity and public health conference for health care professionals at the Baton Rouge center. Blacks are the most prone to obesity, the study shows, with about 38 percent of young blacks either overweight or obese the majority of which fall into the obese range. The report says the overall D grade indicates “insufficient appropriate physical activity opportunities and programs available to the majority of Louisiana’s children and youth. In previous studies, 46 percent of high school students report going to physical education classes five days a week; but drastic declines are reported from ninth grade to 12th grade (64 percent to 26 percent. Katzmarzyk said there is insufficient data on the overall physical and psychological well-being of students, government investments in fighting obesity, industry and philanthropic investments, family perception and roles regarding physical activity and community infrastructure, facilities and programs. BATON ROUGE — A health research center released a new report card Monday on children’s health assigning Louisiana an overall grade of D based on the prevalence of obesity and insufficient exercise programs for young people. The Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge released the study, along with recommendations for governments and communities to increase physical activities among children and to reduce the ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in organized exercise regimens. The study, Louisiana’s Report Card on Physical Activity and Health for Children and Youth, will be the focus of the center’s conference starting Wednesday in Baton Rouge to examine solutions to childhood obesity and diabetes. In Louisiana, 36 percent of children ages 10 to 17 are overweight compared with the national percentage of 31 percent, according to the national Child Policy Research Center and the Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative/Data Resource Center. The Louisiana report card gave grades for several indicators of health activities and state policies and procedures, including a D for physical activity and for the amount of time spent watching TV or passive interaction with a computer. Training of school personnel in physical activity got a C while overall government strategies and policy took a B-minus. Read Childhood Obesity

Marks, a Buffalo-area native, is senior vice president and director of the Health Group at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which in 2007 committed $500 million over five years toward childhood obesity programs, one of the largest public health initiatives ever by a private philanthropy. But he and others warn that for such programs to have any effect, they must continue over long periods, and be complemented with greater levels of personal responsibility by parents and changes in government policies. The rate of childhood obesity, after rising without a break for more than two decades, may have peaked, according to the latest government data collected from 1999 to 2006 by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and published earlier this year. The Fitness for Kids Challenge aims to involve hundreds of elementary and middle schools in the eight-county region in competitions over eight months for prizes, including a $1,000 grant for health-related programs, based on the students’ success at meeting goals for physical fitness and nutrition. PRWeb, a leader in online news and press release distribution, has been used by more than 40,000 organizations of all sizes to increase the visibility of their news, improve their search engine rankings and drive traffic to their Web site. New York, New York ( PRWEB ) September 18, 2008 — According to the CHILDREN'S INTERNATIONAL OBESITY FOUNDATION (CIOF), an acknowledged authority and voice regarding childhood obesity, the short-term financial benefits and incentives for fattening up children are making childhood obesity into a profit opportunity for too many, and at the ultimate expense of children's lives. Douglas Castle, speaking for CIOF, said, "It is acknowledged by every major healthcare agency and authority in the United States and throughout the world that obesity is the greatest threat facing our children today. The snack food and beverage giants, the pharmaceutical companies, the pop-psychologists, the clothing manufacturers, the fad diet pundits — even some unscrupulous healthcare providers and foundations which are actually just puppets for these same special interest groups are getting richer and richer by feeding off of this epidemic. Robert Hinnen, CIOF's Executive Director, said, "Too much money is going to these profiteers and political interests — and not nearly enough is going to organizations like CIOF, where our agenda is completely transparent and our mission is to predict, prevent and treat obesity; in that order. ABOUT CHILDREN'S INTERNATIONAL OBESITY FOUNDATION (CIOF) CIOF is an approved IRS Section 501(c)(3)not-for-profit public foundation and charity whose international mission it is to eliminate dangerous overweight and obesity in children and teens through prediction, prevention, support and treatment.
