The ACT Labor Party has promised more than $3 million to tackle childhood obesity if it is re-elected next month. The commitment includes funding to promote healthy eating habits in children and to encourage more exercise. One of the surprising discoveries in the article is how parents, despite their best intentions, contribute to a child’s bad eating habits. Recent studies have revealed that childhood obesity rates have doubled in the past 30 years, and today, approximately 25 percent of America’s children between the ages of 6 and 19 are considered overweight. Childhood obesity is not solely a cosmetic condition; being overweight puts a tremendous stress on the body’s heart, bones and lungs and increased the risk of heart attack and stroke at an early age. The measure would also expand professional development programs available to physical and health educators and would include the promotion of healthy, active lifestyles in federal grant programs for elementary and secondary schools. The FIT Kids Act is currently pending before the House Education and Labor Committee, and it will receive my strong support when it is considered by the full House of Representatives. JACKSONVILLE, FL — Northeast Florida has over 46,000 new ways to combat childhood obesity in the Jacksonville area. The Australian head of fast-food chain McDonald’s says there is no mystery surrounding childhood obesity; children are fat because they do not exercise as they used to. Mr Bush said fear of crime was a factor in obesity, arguing parents do not allow children to walk to school any more. The House of Representatives standing committee inquiry, which began in May, is looking at the increasing prevalence of obesity and future implications for the health system. University of Sydney Associate Professor Jenny O’Dea presented the findings of a study on obese children and a survey of 345,713 adults. The Roy Morgan survey also showed the rate of obesity for adults in the lowest socio-economic groups grew at almost triple the rate of those belonging to the highest earning and educated groups between April 2000 and March 2007. A 2005 study found that 25 percent of San Mateo County’s youth are overweight, prompting the Get Healthy San Mateo County Task Force — a collection of teachers, health department officials and community groups — to find ways to reduce the problem. Nationwide, the child obesity rate has more than doubled in the past three decades for children ages 2 to 5 and has more than tripled for 6- to 11-year-olds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
