The team used data from a medical clinic, located in an urban neighborhood in Indiana, US, which included information on childrens’ body mass index (BMI) taken over a two year period. The map was then compared to specialised satellite images that measured how reflective the area was to the sun’s light, which showed how much green space was present. According to Bell, this could be because the children with lower BMI scores had more access to parks and yards, where they might engage in physical activities. While Wareham acknowledged the theory that the greenness might increase physical activity, he also noted that it “could be associated with other factors that lead to weight gain such as dietary behaviour. Jackson, the department chair of Environmental Health Sciences at UCLA, was in Rochester last week to kick off the fourth annual Rochester Regional Community Design Center’s “Reshaping Rochester” lecture series. As the country became more auto-centric, says Jackson, it not only pushed development farther and farther away from urban centers and increased our dependency on fossil fuels - it has, over the last 50 years, contributed greatly to the steady increase in heart, respiratory, and diabetes illnesses in the US. And the dramatic reduction of physical exercise as basic as walking has coincided with a sharp increase in childhood obesity, early onset of diabetes, and mental health problems. Among the standard treatments for the number-one malady among adults in the US - depression - is more exercise and physical activity. There is ample evidence that being overweight in childhood and adolescence contributes to emotional disturbance, impairments in self-esteem and self-concept, and disturbances related to body image. Studies also show that obese youngsters are more likely to develop serious medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, some forms of cancer, and orthopedic problems. The good news is that you can help your son change his eating and exercise habits and get control of the situation. It is important to see an eating disorders specialist who can complete a detailed assessment of a child’s eating habits and level of physical activity. A good evaluation would include an assessment of your child’s cardiac risk factors such as family history of early cardiovascular disease, blood pressure levels, the presence of diabetes mellitus, and high cholesterol levels. Although obesity is very difficult to treat, it has been proven that “behavioral treatments,” or teaching children and their families new eating and exercise habits, are superior to alternative treatments. University of New South Wales researchers say the animal study shows that overweight expectant mothers are more likely to have babies with more body fat, who are at greater risk of diabetes and lipid metabolic disorders later in life. The study, published in the journal Endocrinology, shows pups from obese mother rats that were fed more milk are almost twice as heavy as those born to lean mothers with regular milk consumption at weaning age. The diet used to feed the mother rats is designed to approximate a western diet — high fat content, palatable, with a lot of variety. The study also found roughly two in five parents of underweight children believed their kids were average weight and parents were more likely to report sons as underweight and daughters as overweight. She compared standard measures of children’s size - body mass index and waist circumference - with parental perceptions and found that the two rarely jibed.
