The plan, which will be implemented in late 2009, will look into what the local government can do to help reverse the childhood obesity epidemic in Framingham, which mirrors the situation in Massachusetts and the nation. Besides officials from the departments of health, schools, and parks and recreation, there will also be town engineers, who play a role in designing infrastructure that encourages residents to be more active. Mascoop said all efforts will be directed to get children more active and healthier, somewhat "free range kids," a concept he heard of at a recent summit in Somerville that gathered 85 officials from communities and public health organizations across the state to discuss how to become healthier communities. Childhood obesity, she said, is a problem that requires everybody joining forces together from schools offering more physical education courses to town engineers designing more and safer sidewalks to encourage more walking to parents making more nutritious and healthier choices when grocery shopping.
