A study by nutritionists at the Toowoomba Hospital, in southern Queensland, has revealed the factors contributing to childhood obesity start well before children get to school. The study looked at children in the four to six year age group at 18 schools. Just over half of the children had junk food, including fried potato products, cakes, sweet biscuits and softdrinks, more than twice a day. About 40 per cent of children were eating only one daily serve of vegetables, compared to the recommended four serves. Nutritionist Fiona McKenzie-Lewis says the survey shows the need for parents to monitor the eating habits of their preschoolers while it is still largely within their power to control them.
