On Friday, the Gibson County Coordinated School Health and its “No Child Left on Their Behind” program was recognized by the Governor’s Office as a part of Child Health Week. The program was funded with a $2,000 mini grant from the state Office of Coordinated School Health used to purchase the pedometers. Childhood obesity is a problem that didn’t occur overnight and requires efforts to curb it for the long haul, said Bob Duncan, director of the state’s Office of Children’s Care Coordination. Over the years, data collected from school health programs should show improvements in the welfare of students as well as translate to academic gains, said Sara Smith, state coordinator for the Office of Coordinate School Health. It’s going to take partnerships with the community - with the faith community, business community - to help make the lifestyle changes so that our children have the opportunity to live a longer and healthier life.
