About 14 percent of children ages 2 to 5 years, 19 percent of children 6 to 11 years, and 17 percent of those 12 to 19 years are currently classified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as overweight. On Friday, the Gibson County Coordinated School Health and its “No Child Left on Their Behind” program was recognized by the Governor’s Office as a part of Child Health Week. The program was funded with a $2,000 mini grant from the state Office of Coordinated School Health used to purchase the pedometers. Childhood obesity is a problem that didn’t occur overnight and requires efforts to curb it for the long haul, said Bob Duncan, director of the state’s Office of Children’s Care Coordination. Over the years, data collected from school health programs should show improvements in the welfare of students as well as translate to academic gains, said Sara Smith, state coordinator for the Office of Coordinate School Health. It’s going to take partnerships with the community - with the faith community, business community - to help make the lifestyle changes so that our children have the opportunity to live a longer and healthier life. The study says dog ownership can decrease the chances of children being obese by as much as 50 per cent. They are called man’s best friend, but they could also be the best weapon in the fight against childhood obesity. A new study indicates dog ownership may also be the antidote to junk food, computer games and television which many say causes childhood obesity. Jo Salmon from Deakin University in Victoria was the lead researcher on the project which looked at obesity levels among kids with and without dogs. For 10 to 12-year-olds, 30 per cent who did not have a dog suffered weight problems compared to 27 per cent of their peers who have a pet. A study by nutritionists at the Toowoomba Hospital, in southern Queensland, has revealed the factors contributing to childhood obesity start well before children get to school. The study looked at children in the four to six year age group at 18 schools. Just over half of the children had junk food, including fried potato products, cakes, sweet biscuits and softdrinks, more than twice a day. About 40 per cent of children were eating only one daily serve of vegetables, compared to the recommended four serves. Nutritionist Fiona McKenzie-Lewis says the survey shows the need for parents to monitor the eating habits of their preschoolers while it is still largely within their power to control them.
