The researchers used several statistical models to link obesity rates to the amount of time spent viewing fast food advertising, finding that viewing more fast food commercials on television raises the risk of obesity in children. But the researchers’ estimate relies on older data gathered in the late 1990s, according to Elaine Kolish, a spokesman for the Council of Better Business Bureaus. Since then, two of the largest fast food chains — Burger King and McDonald’s — and more than a dozen other packaged food companies have signed on to the council’s Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative, she said, pledging to advertise only their healthier products to children under age 12. Kelly Brownell, director of Yale University ’s Rudd Center for Food Policy, said reliable estimates of television’s impact on childhood obesity are hard to calculate because of the many assumptions statisticians must make. Only three countries — Sweden, Norway and Finland — have banned commercial sponsorship of children’s programs, and study authors acknowledged that the chances of such a ban in the U. ULM professors Connie Lewis and Stacy Webb wrote the grant proposal after realizing that proper nutritional management in infancy could play a vital role in establishing a lifetime habit of health and wellness. Funded by the grant from the Living Well Foundation, Lewis and Webb will head a project to equip expectant women with the knowledge necessary to provide appropriate nutritional intake for their young children. Another intent of the project is to reinforce the health benefits of breastfeeding for mother and infant, and to provide healthy alternatives for mothers who choose to feed their infant commercial formulas. The American Academy of Pediatrics has specific recommendations for the amount of formula an infant should be fed according to his or her birth weight, current weight and age. The grant money will be used to provide education regarding recommended amounts of formula based on guidelines from The American Academy of Pediatrics. Read Childhood Obesity

A study from the University of Illinois has shown that a ban on the advertising of fast-food restaurants like McDonald’s could reduce childhood obesity by 14-18%, depending on the age group in question. The recent study coincides with a 2006 study by the Institute of Medicine, which conceded a link between advertising and obesity, but failed to provide any hard evidence between them. According to the Center for Diseases Control and Prevention, one third of children in the US under the age of 18 are overweight or obese. But it is used for almost everyone who is fat and seeing as saying that someon is fat is considered to be insulting nowadays the word is replaced by obese. Read Childhood Obesity

The brochure provides an in-depth look at childhood obesity, the causes, concerns, how to determine your child’s BMI-for-age percentile and treatment options. The ‘Understanding Childhood Obesity’ series, in conjunction with our subsequent childhood obesity materials, helps parents, caregivers and loved ones better understand their child’s BMI,” said Joseph Nadglowski, Jr. For the first time ever, we are seeing children develop Type 2 diabetes at an alarming rate, and only 8 percent of elementary schools and less than 7 percent of middle and high schools have daily physical education requirements in the U. It is the goal of the OAC to help parents better understand this epidemic and provide them with the necessary education to combat childhood obesity,” said Nadglowski. The mission of the OAC is to elevate and empower those affected by obesity through education, advocacy and support. In addition, the OAC will increase obesity education, work to improve access to medical treatments for the obese, advocate for safe and effective treatments and strive to eliminate the negative stigma associated with obesity. Browse > Home / Diet , Kid’s Health / Should We Ban Fast Food Ads To Fight Childhood Obesity? Researchers led by Shin-Yi Chou from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania carried out a study to see what impact fast food ads had on kids. They used data on 13,000 children from the 1979 Child-Young Adult National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, as well as the National Longitudal Survey of Youth in 1997. They discovered that by reducing the number of fast food ads on TV, you could actually reduce obesity levels among kids. By taking out fast food ads from television, it is believed that obesity levels for kids aged 3-11 could be cut by 18%. The biggest issue with this new study is actually trying to put in place a ban on fast food ads. Read Childhood Obesity

(Childhood Obesity News) Economists Say TV Ads Contribute to Childhood Obesity - I Really Should Study

That is ironic in the fact that the show is a medical drama, and the commercials promote fast food, which leads to cholesterol counts over 240. They are able to go to the restaurant and get whatever they want, and often this occurs after the show they are watching is over. In this month’s Journal of Law and Economics, Micheal Grossman, professor of economics at the City University of New York, quoted, “There is not a lot of evidence that overweight kids are more likely to watch TV than other kids. What is interesting about the above quote is the fact that the message conveyed during the television ads, is causing the weight gain, not the passive action of viewing television. Researchers believe that if a ban on fast food ads was implemented, the result could reduce the number of kids who were are overweight or obese from ages 3-11 by as much as 18%. Targeting the market is effective, but it is still to be proved, when the child is taken, or drives to the restaurant, that they will order the healthier choices. Read Childhood Obesity

The UA researcher will hire about 30 adolescents to help develop an integrative software "widget" that will track, map and share nutritional and physical activity via mobile phones and social networking Web sites. The researchers will be targeting kids who don’t like to exercise but like other activities such as drawing. UA researchers will then offer the "stealth health" program in local after-school education programs and gather data from those students’ use of the widget. In the final year of the study, UA will partner with 4-H, YMCA and America On The Move to create a national student competition to modify the widget and study the "contagion effect" - how quickly the idea spreads and is used by youths.
