Fylde Coast YMCA has won a prestigious Best Practice Recruitment and Retention Award for its excellence in encouraging families in the area to attend and benefit from MEND Programmes aimed at tackling childhood obesity. MEND Programmes are delivered by Fylde Coast YMCA in partnership with North Lancashire PCT and Wyre Borough Council, at local YMCA sites across Wyre and Fylde, forming an important part of the effort to combat child overweight and obesity in the region. The annual MEND Best Practice Awards are designed to acknowledge and recognise teams that excel in running MEND Programmes in the community, for the benefit of local children and their families. An effective 10-week course which is delivered free of charge to participants, it uses techniques developed by health experts to help 7 to 13-year-old children who are above the healthy weight range for their age and height, and their parents or carers learn about food and discover fun ways to get fit. An overall winner was named Overall Best MEND Programme 2008 and received a prestigious engraved trophy and a total £500 cash prize to be spent on MEND-related activity. Read Childhood Obesity
