According to the Centers for Disease Control, the rate of obesity among children ages 6 to 11 reached 17 percent in 2006 more than double 1980’s level of 6. Among that demographic, the prevalence of obesity has more than tripled from 5 percent to 17 percent in the same time period. In other words, behavior plays a major part in packing on pounds, and parents, through their actions and attitudes, play an equally significant role in halting the trend. To combat that effect, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than two hours of screen time a day for children over 2 and none for children younger than that. Entering the foods they’ve eaten in a day and the activities they’ve done, kids can see whether their rocket will reach Planet Power or fall short.
