Nine local authorities are to share £30m in Government funding aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles to families and curbing childhood obesity, health secretary Alan Johnson revealed on Monday. The Healthy Towns initiative forms part of the Government’s £400m Change4Life public health campaign (News, 16 October). The nine local authorities chosen for the Healthy Towns project are Dudley, Halifax (Calderdale), Sheffield, Tower Hamlets, Thetford, Middlesbrough, Manchester, Tewkesbury and Portsmouth. The councils have been funded for proposals such as Dudley’s ‘Let’s Go Outside’, which encourages families to make the most of outdoor areas by transforming parks, play areas and nature reserves into ‘family health hubs’.
