HARRISONBURG - The acting surgeon general of the United States and Virginia’s state health commissioner visited James Madison University on Wednesday, encouraging students, officials and the community to help stop the spread of childhood obesity. Galson, the acting surgeon general, and commissioner Karen Remley participated in a news conference, roundtable discussion and public address during their appearance at JMU. Her focus on the obesity issue, she said, centers on encouraging women and families to combat obesity during their children’s infancy. For 30 minutes, Galson outlined obesity trends and statistics, advertised career opportunities within his department, and encouraged everyone to eat less and exercise more. It is fantastic to actually be on the campus and see the fine work that’s taking place here.
