Maryland is one of the states that can benefit from a new funding program to combat pediatric obesity. Grants will go to projects that pitch creative ideas for combating obesity in schools and communities and those that can be easily implemented and studied. Earlier this year, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield and the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington partnered help prevent childhood obesity in the Washington area, where one in four children are overweight or obese and more than half between the ages of 5 and 10 have at least one risk factor leading to cardiovascular disease.
