HARRISONBURG - The acting surgeon general of the United States and Virginia’s state health commissioner visited James Madison University on Wednesday, encouraging students, officials and the community to help stop the spread of childhood obesity. Galson, the acting surgeon general, and commissioner Karen Remley participated in a news conference, roundtable discussion and public address during their appearance at JMU. Her focus on the obesity issue, she said, centers on encouraging women and families to combat obesity during their children’s infancy. For 30 minutes, Galson outlined obesity trends and statistics, advertised career opportunities within his department, and encouraged everyone to eat less and exercise more. It is fantastic to actually be on the campus and see the fine work that’s taking place here. Child Obesity Seen as Warning of Heart Disease - New York Times(Childhood Obesity News)

The study, presented Tuesday at the American Heart Association conference in New Orleans, found that the thickness of artery walls of children and teenagers who are obese or have high cholesterol resembled the thickness of artery walls of an average 45-year-old. Another Australian study, of 150 10-year-olds, found that in the heart pumping process, the left ventricles were slower to untwist in children with a higher body-mass index, a relationship of weight to height, said a co-author of that study, Walter Abhayaratna, a researcher at Australian National University. Scientists, who measure the carotid artery because it is easier to capture images of neck arteries than the coronary arteries directly connected to the heart, say increased thickness in the carotid artery wall indicates greater amounts of fatty plaque in the arteries leading to the heart and brain. Ludwig, director of the Optimal Weight for Life program at Children’s Hospital Boston, said that seeing risk factors like CIMT in children was especially worrying because “there’s not only a much longer period of time for it to be damaging the body, but it is also occurring at a stage of life where the body is still forming and the physiological systems are still being fine-tuned. Childhood Obesity News - Weighing up obesity signs from birth - NEWS.com.au

Leading researchers claim the Federal Government’s Healthy Kids Check plan to weigh all children from the age of four from next year is leaving it too late, because one in five children are overweight by the age of age three. Their advice comes as a senior Adelaide heart specialist predicted the nation will fail to cut obesity levels over the next 20 years unless it develops new strategies to tackle the complex epidemic. The ownership of the cause of obesity is already known, but if all we do is maesure people, allowing them only to COMPETE on conformity to ideal shape and size, but not to play competitive sport. I tell you, it is the very researchers and psychologists, the people of science who created these Frankenstein foods in the first-place, and they want us to give them money to measure kids from birth, a 7-up series for Fat kids, and REFUSE TO RECOGNISE the very role our productivity driven economy plays in the infection of its citizens with SOCIAL-DISEASES. In an alarming report presented this week by the American Heart Association, the thickness of the artery walls of teenagers who are obese were reported to resemble the thickness of an average 45-year-old’s artery walls. We might not be grappling with a problem as huge as the US where childhood obesity is considered an epidemic or the UK. Unlike in much of the West, where childhood obesity is more prevalent among low-income groups, in India it is a malaise that afflicts the better off. Medical experts attribute the weighty troubles of developing countries to changed dietary habits read an overdose of fast and processed foods and a steep drop in levels of physical activity. An unhealthy diet is partly a function of the greater access and choice that the expanding middle class has. And partly because of the compulsions of modern urban life, where both parents often work and prefer quick and easy processed food options rather than cooking every meal from scratch. (Childhood Obesity News) Fat kids found to have arteries of 45-year-olds - The Associated Press
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Obese children as young as 10 had the arteries of 45-year-olds and other heart abnormalities that greatly raise their risk of heart disease, say doctors who used ultrasound tests to take a peek inside. She and colleagues used painless ultrasound tests to measure the thickness of the wall of a major neck artery in 70 children, ages 10 to 16. A separate study tied childhood obesity to abnormal enlargement of the left atrium, one of the chambers of the heart. Walter Abhayaratna of Australian National University in Canberra, Australia, also used ultrasound tests and found impairment in the heart’s ability to relax between beats in children who were overweight or obese.
