A study of the popular combination pill shows while it did lower bad cholesterol, it did little more than one of its components, Zocor alone, to keep plaque from clogging up the arteries. With obesity rates still high, the American Academy of Pediatrics makes a controversial move calling for cholesterol screening for kids as young as two and encouraging use of cholesterol-lowering drugs in kids as young as eight who have too much bad cholesterol along with other risk factors. The Food and Drug Administration made another move to protect the nation’s children, issuing a strong warning to parents not to give over-the-counter cough and cold medicines to children under age two because of serious safety concerns. With an average of 20,000 children under the age of five hospitalized or killed because of influenza complications each year, the CDC recommended all children from six months up to their 19th birthday get an annual flu shot. The latest research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association said exposure to the chemical found in most plastics may increase risk of heart disease, Type-2 diabetes, and liver problems over many years of exposure. And to keep the heart from skipping one more beat, a study suggests performing compressions to the tune of “Stayin’ Alive. Read Childhood Obesity

America is the most obese nation in the world, yet in a three-month period ending in May 2007, Gatorade (owned by Pepsi) spent $81 million marketing its product to us. If you’re an obese, 6-foot tall male who weighs 206 pounds, and you are jogging to lose weight, the first two miles you run simply burn the calories you drank for “hydration. In addition to the American diet leading the world in its fat and sugar content, it also leads the way in salt. Is it really possible to sell fat, sugar and salt through vending machines in the public school system five days a week, nine months a year, to the unhealthiest generation of children in history? Britain’s parents will be accused this week of “killing their children with kindness”, as the government embarks on a new campaign aimed at the growing and deadly problem of childhood obesity. Graphic examples of children dying early from diabetes, heart disease and cancer will be publicised and the Department of Health will reveal “shocking” levels of ignorance and complacency among parents who are failing to accept responsibility for their children’s health. Kids who eat the wrong sorts of food and sit around all day are more likely to get heart disease, cancer, diabetes and to die young. The document, a briefing on the government’s Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives strategy, details how parents are helping to establish bad habits in their offspring. Almost a quarter of kids are already overweight by the time they arrive at primary school, which is the parents’ responsibility. Those less than healthy foods are the last rewards they should turn to, because they are storing up problems for their children’s future health. Read Childhood Obesity

One of the most serious charges that can be leveled in any decent society is to accuse someone of taking food out of the mouths of children. After a drumbeat of reports regarding the nation’s childhood obesity epidemic, school districts in the state switched over to healthier fare for our kids. The GA mandated proper nutrition standards in 2005 although they’ve since postponed the deadline for implementation but 95 percent of the state’s elementary schools rose to the challenge and adopted the standards. In a perfect storm of right choices and an economic meltdown, the selection of menu items that were more costly to begin with jumped along with the overall price of food. Read Childhood Obesity

CHILDHOOD obesity is determined before the age of five, new research showed. Most excess weight is gained by a child before they start school and one in four children in England aged four to five are overweight, according to the latest figures. The EarlyBird Diabetes study of 233 infants from birth to puberty also found that today’s children are fatter than those of the 1980s. The authors of the Plymouth-based study suggested that childhood obesity should be prevented before children reach their fifth birthday. Read Childhood Obesity

And it uncovered that the path towards childhood obesity is set before the age of 5. But in terms of risk factors for excess weight gain, we know that children and I am talking about the first few years and primary school, watching television, soft drink, not being breastfed or not being breastfed for a long period of time, having parents who themselves struggle with their weight which probably reflects partly genetic predisposition as well as a shared environment, these are all factors which predispose to excess weight gain during childhood and in adolescence. There is a small but significant impact of breastfeeding on putting someone at decreased risk of excess weight gain but there is nothing to say that formula, appropriate formula, is itself a major problem. But we also need to be intervening with our public transport system, with our, the issue about food marketing to children, about food prices and food availability. This includes the schoolyard and the school but also includes our workplaces, our broader environment and it includes earlier childhood. And I do think we need to probably ramp up our focus on children in those early years, parents in their vital role of parenting. Read Childhood Obesity

Tampa, Florida–I found an interesting article about how the governor of New York plans to raise millions of dollars. The governor of New York is proposing an obesity tax to raise about 400 million dollars a way. For example, a can of regular soda would cost 15 cents more than a diet soda. Health officials say the tax would help fight childhood obesity while the National Beverage Association says lack of exercise and genetics are to blame for childhood obesity.
