The NHS Information Centre in Britain recently released data showing that one-quarter of all four and five-year-olds starting primary school are overweight , and about one-third of children aged 10 or 11 are also obese. Some say that the option to “opt out” of the measurements has resulted in some of the heaviest children failing to participate, resulting in a distorted picture of childhood obesity. Health officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calculated the body mass index (BMI) of about 8,000 children and teens in the report, which was published in the latest issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association. In November, the journal Pediatrics found in a study of chronic mediation use in children ages 5 to 19 that more doctors are giving prescription drugs to children with obesity-related health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and depression. According to lead researcher Colin Palmer, from the University of Dundee in Scotland, a variation in this gene called FTO, caused children in a study to eat on average 100 extra calories at every meal. According to Palmer children with the gene variant, may not necessarily eat more food, just tend to choose food higher in fat. This gene variant, maybe partially to blame for the vast obesity epidemic that is sweeping across America. A US ban on fast-food advertisements during children’s programming would reduce the number of overweight children (age 3-11) in America by 18%, and would lower the number of overweight adolescents (age 12-18) by 14%, according to a largest-of-its-kind study conducted for the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). The study, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and carried out by university economists, measured the number of weekly hours of fast-food advertising messages on American TV viewed by children and found a definitive link between these TV ads and the incidence of childhood obesity. The study also found that the elimination of tax deductibility tied to advertising would similarly produce declines in childhood obesity, albeit at a smaller rate of five to seven percent. The authors deduce that, since the corporate income tax rate is 35%, the elimination of the tax deductibility of food advertising costs would be equivalent to increasing the price of advertising by 54%. Though such a ban on fast-food ads would be effective, the authors question whether such a high degree of government involvement - and the costs of implementing such policies - is a practical option. According to the study, research indicates that there is an 80% chance an overweight adolescent will be an obese adult and that more than 300,000 deaths can be attributed to obesity and weight in the United States every year. Richard Rosenkranz, assistant professor of human nutrition at K-State, is a former doctoral student of Dzewaltowski and worked under his guidance to compose a model of different components that contribute to an obesity-prone home food environment. Since children’s homes are the most influential environment in developing dietary behaviors, their research is meant to create a full view of the food environment from which an individual’s dietary intake could be moderated, according to Rosenkranz. In the political and economic environment, the study found that factors like food pricing and family socioeconomic status affect the dietary lifestyle in the home. Rosenkranz said there are some simple changes parents came make in the home to prevent their child from being overweight, such as having regular family meals with fruits and vegetables and no soda, while saving junk foods for occasions like trips to the movies or restaurants. Although the report, which replaces a retired 1998 policy on cholesterol in childhood, advocates targeted application of the guidelines and correlated screenings, Killough said the policy proves beneficial for the majority of infants. The previous recommendation, which called for whole milk for children between 12 and 24 months, followed by 2 percent for 2-to 4-year-olds, rested on the traditional belief that fats aid the healthy and proper development of myelin, a substance that forms a sheath lining the nerve cells in the brain. Gershenson said that although considerations for reduced-fat milk might be necessary in the case of an already-obese baby, he believes, in most average-weight infants, whole milk "would not condemn a child to a lifetime of obesity or atherosclerosis, as long as the family can be vigilant about controlling fatty foods and overeating through the remainder of childhood. Through his studies, he has pinpointed the intake of sweet beverages and fast food, as well as prolonged periods of "media time" — time spent sedentary in front of the television, computer or video games — as factors that increase a child's risk of becoming overweight. The study featuring in the current issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism pronounces a clear link between hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid function) and weight gain. While an underactive thyroid gland slows the process of metabolism, the overproduction of the hormones over-stimulates the metabolism. Besides the blood test measuring their thyroid hormone levels and thyroid antibodies, the children went through ultrasound tests which captured the structural changes in the thyroid. Interestingly, while the changes in thyroid structure signaled the presence of an autoimmune disease Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a condition in which in which T-cells mistakenly attack the thyroid, the thyroid antibody scores contradicted its presence. Moreover, as the BMI (Body Mass Index is defined as the individual’s body weight divided by the square of their height) increased, the thyroid hormone levels were known to decrease.
