Between 1986 and 1998 a national survey conducted showed that the incidence of obesity doubled in children between the ages of four and twelve. A child who develops diabetes is likely to develop kidney failure or heart disease and the associated side effects of diabetes include blindness and arterial disease. If children are taught to avoid foods and beverages that contain refined sugars and other junk foods and replace these foods with whole foods that contain real nutrients that build up the body instead of tearing it down, they will grow to be strong and healthy adults. Children also need to be taught the importance of regular exercise to grow strong and healthy bodies and to enjoy the benefits of the hormones that are released with exercise. It is important to note, however, that even if a parent is faced with a child with a weight problem, a child should never be placed on an overly-restrictive diet or not allowed to eat when they are hungry. With firm, loving support of involved parents a child does not have to be sentenced to a lifetime of poor health and disease. Read Childhood Obesity

Fenamore’s recent article quickly gets to the heart of the problem and some easy, down-to-earth suggestions that every family should take to heart, regardless of their size. One of the best features of Betty Confidential is the social networking component, where women gather together virtually to discuss politics, lifestyles, featured articles, and other issues they face every day, such as childhood obesity. Juggling career, family and all of the other balls women must keep in the air today, fast food and packaged goods easily become the staple of many homes. She asks moms and women everywhere to look at their own foundations for their poor body image and choices, centering around the basic lack of self-care and the lack of self prioritization. As she pointed out, in the United States alone, the epidemic that is childhood obesity is spreading at alarming rates and undermining the general health and well being of kids everywhere. Childhood Obesity News - Kids' futures imperiled, report says - Los Angeles Daily News

A combination of deficient policies and a lack of investment in improving the health and education of children is undermining the economic prosperity of California, according to a report set to be released today by Children Now. The annual report card found that policies and funding priorities that shortchange children are not only increasing the state’s health-care costs and decreasing economic output but jeopardizing its future. As the state faces a record deficit and partisan differences have resulted in a stalemate in Sacramento, the report found that California and its future work force are losing their competitive edge in the global economy. For instance, the report found that California ranks near the bottom on national measures of student achievement, and 20 percent of state students drop out of high school before graduation. And more than 1 million children are projected to be without health insurance, while the rates of childhood obesity and asthma are alarming, according to the report. These include ensuring that every child has affordable health insurance, investing more earlier in a child’s life when the brain is still forming, improving the K-12 school system and providing safe and enriching after-school programs to all children who lack access to them. Childhood Obesity News - Truth on childhood obesity - Sydney Morning Herald

The recent release of the CSIRO’s Australian National Children’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey, which studied the habits of more than 4000 children, found the number of overweight and obese children in Australia has only increased marginally since the last major survey in 1995. For too long the food and beverage industry has been labelled by some as being the sole cause of childhood obesity by providing too many high salt, high fat and high energy food products. It is the Australian food industry which has, and continues to be, at the forefront of delivering safe, healthy and affordable food to our tables. In the 1990s, Australian food companies were world leaders in reducing trans-fats from many products, with the net result that trans-fat levels in the diets of most Australians are well below World Health Organisation recommendations. The industry has therefore released the Responsible Children’s Marketing Initiative, which commits manufacturers to not advertise to children under 12 unless the products promote healthy dietary and lifestyles choices. The point I seek to make is that it is easy to play the blame game but finding solutions to serious problems is hard - and credible solutions to serious public health problems is harder again. (Childhood Obesity News) Obesity Starts Earlier Than You Think - PR Web (press release)
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
PRWeb, a leader in online news and press release distribution, has been used by more than 40,000 organizations of all sizes to increase the visibility of their news, improve their search engine rankings and drive traffic to their Websites. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done, as it is likely that the mother has the same genetic predisposition as the child in the womb and more than likely is eating the types of junk food that ensures an obese child. By simply substituting the MedWell equivalent for the foods that people like to eat, you are ensuring a dramatic increase in appetite suppression along with beneficial changes in the genes that would otherwise promote obesity. Couple that genetic predisposition with the wrong hormonal mix in the womb, and the child is destined to a life-long struggle against obesity and its health consequences," added Dr. Therefore, he set out several years to invent a new technology that could provide healthy comfort foods that would alter the gene expression of both the mother and the child in the womb. He founded MedWell Foods, which offers products that are a result of new food technology that allows the production of once "forbidden" foods that normally cause people to gain weight, such as breads, pasta and desserts that now have been developed to decrease hunger instead of promoting it. K-State Researcher Finds Correlation Between Childhood Obesity and … - MarketWatch- Childhood Obesity News

Sara Rosenkranz, doctoral student in human nutrition, Manhattan, conducted research that found that healthy children with higher levels of body fat and lower levels of physical activity had greater amounts of airway narrowing after exercise. The researchers found that the higher the body fat and the lower the level of activity of the child, the more likely they were to have asthma-like symptoms following exercise. At the completion of the project, a follow-up letter was sent to the parents that showed their child’s pulmonary test results and body fat percentage, which also had the corresponding fat group based on the child’s age, gender and ethnicity. For many of the students that had higher levels of body fat and lower levels of activity, Rosenkranz said it is possible that they had the early stages of asthma and they didn’t know it. Others involved in the project include Craig Harms, K-State associate professor of kinesiology and Rosenkranz’s mentor; Bethany Beckman, K-State senior in biology and pre-occupational therapy, Scott City; and Kate Swain, medical student at Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
