SALEM — A Harvard doctoral student has put together a radio announcement aimed at informing Salem parents about childhood nutrition and obesity. Jessica Garcia, a student at the Harvard School of Public Health, gathered focus groups of Salem parents last fall and worked with the school Food Services to conduct her research. Nationwide, more than 17 percent of children between ages 6 and 19 are obese, according to national studies conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to the CDC, nationwide obesity rates among boys, ages 12 to 19, are 16 percent for whites, 23 percent for blacks, and 21 percent for Hispanics. Garcia said radio stations are required to devote a certain amount of airtime to public service announcements, so she is pitching her PSA to local stations. The more they participate, the more resources (the district) will have in terms of commodities and the more fruits and vegetables they can buy. Read Childhood Obesity

Former Seattle Storm player Sheryl Swoopes discusses the importance of diet and exercise to prevent childhood obesity during a Jan. Students need to fight the temptation of grabbing a quick bite at fast-food restaurants and exercise more to stem the growing epidemic of childhood obesity, Sheryl Swoopes told a Jan. During the former Seattle Storm playerâs 45-minute presentation in the schoolâs gym, Swoopes urged students to watch what they eat and to take 10 to 20 minutes out of their day to exercise. Information from two recent National Health Examination Surveys of 8,165 children ages 2-19, found about 16 percent of children and teenagers were obese, defined as having a body mass index of above the 95th percentile on U. Unfortunately, increased obesity is leading to a rise in cases of Type II diabetes in children and teens, Swoopes said. Read Childhood Obesity

Tackling obesity is child’s play for NHS - Essex Echo(Childhood Obesity News)
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
A GROUNDBREAKING scheme is aiming to defuse the ticking timebomb of childhood obesity by getting more children across south Essex up and active during their schoolday. As figures show more than a quarter of UK children are now overweight, health chiefs believe the key to keeping youngsters slim and fit is to build more modern and exciting play equipment in schools to encourage them to work up a sweat. All 161 schools across the South West Essex area, which covers Basildon, Billericay, Wickford and Thurrock, will receive funding to build their own playground, which features climbing walls, stage areas, tyre swings and assault course style equipment. The project began in October and already 78 schools across the region have had equipment installed, with many more on the waiting list. Weâre just waiting for training from the scheme advisers which is needed so the children know how to use the equipment properly, and then theyâll all be out there using it every breaktime. If pupils continue to be able to choose what they do at break then I doubt if the obese will put a climbing wall and assault course at the top of their list. Read Childhood Obesity

Child services 'should act on extreme obesity cases' - ABC Online- Topic: Childhood Obesity News

Associate Professor in Nutritian and Dietics at the University of Newcastle, Clare Collins, is also an accredited practitioner and she agrees severe child obesity is a major issue in Australia and it is something that desperately needs to be addressed. The fact is that while the child is young the parents are the ones giving them the majority of the meals they chose the food thats in the cabords, thats eaten at breakfeast, lunch and dinner. A happy meal cost the same amount as a loaf of bread, and the bread lasts longer and is healthy, doesnt take a geneous to figure out which one to buy. The government needs to invest in real education for parents (and even people without chidlren who are not overweight) so that they know how to practice good nutrition at home and do not have problems saying ‘no’ to their children when they want the wrong foods.
