Yadrick , the president of the American Dietetic Association testified Thursday, March 26 , at a Congressional hearing on the state of obesity in the U. He praised the committee for clearly identifying the national imperative to address obesity and the overall health of our population” and said ADA “is committed to improving the health of our citizens. They need to be taught nutrition, how to choose and enjoy food, and they need to be taught how and encouraged to engage in physical activity. Yadrick also highlighted ADA’s recommendations to the federal Child Nutrition Act, including giving the Secretary of Agriculture authority to extend nutrition standards to all foods and beverages sold on campuses throughout the day for schools that participate in school breakfast, lunch and after school programs. UnitedHealth HEROES is a service-learning health literacy collaborative between UnitedHealth Group and Youth Services America that encourages young girls and boys, working alongside educators and youth leaders, to address the issue of childhood obesity in their local communities. Grants were awarded to schools and youth-oriented community center-based programs that have demonstrated an understanding of the health risks of childhood obesity and have proposed inventive solutions to battling the problem. YMCA of Orange County received $500 to help 35 students from Willard Intermediate School in Santa Ana educate their families and peers about the value of nutrition and active lifestyles. The program is working with young people to promote healthy living in the local community, as well as researching ways to reduce obesity among students in key areas such as cafeterias and in school policies. The two-day conference is sponsored by the masters’s of public administration program. It will bring together experts from a variety of backgrounds including public health, public schools and medicine to discuss childhood obesity prevention and how communities can promote healthy lifestyles, said Kant Patel, director of the MPA program at MSU and chair of the conference planning committee. NEW YORK—In an effort to battle childhood obesity in the United States, The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a partnership between the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation, formed the Alliance Healthcare Initiative to combine forces between national medical associations, leading healthcare providers, and employers in order to offer increased health care benefits for the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity. As a result of the initiative, participating health insurance companies will provide reimbursement to healthcare professionals for the treatment of obesity in children. The collaborative efforts aim to provide education and support needed to enable families to implement healthier long-term lifestyle habits, thereby normalizing weight and improving overall health and well being of all family members. I am grateful that our collaborators in the Alliance Healthcare Initiative understand that combating the childhood obesity epidemic is going to take a comprehensive approach to care.
