NEW YORK—In an effort to battle childhood obesity in the United States, The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a partnership between the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation, formed the Alliance Healthcare Initiative to combine forces between national medical associations, leading healthcare providers, and employers in order to offer increased health care benefits for the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity. As a result of the initiative, participating health insurance companies will provide reimbursement to healthcare professionals for the treatment of obesity in children. The collaborative efforts aim to provide education and support needed to enable families to implement healthier long-term lifestyle habits, thereby normalizing weight and improving overall health and well being of all family members. I am grateful that our collaborators in the Alliance Healthcare Initiative understand that combating the childhood obesity epidemic is going to take a comprehensive approach to care.
