UnitedHealth HEROES is a service-learning health literacy collaborative between UnitedHealth Group and Youth Services America that encourages young girls and boys, working alongside educators and youth leaders, to address the issue of childhood obesity in their local communities. Grants were awarded to schools and youth-oriented community center-based programs that have demonstrated an understanding of the health risks of childhood obesity and have proposed inventive solutions to battling the problem. YMCA of Orange County received $500 to help 35 students from Willard Intermediate School in Santa Ana educate their families and peers about the value of nutrition and active lifestyles. The program is working with young people to promote healthy living in the local community, as well as researching ways to reduce obesity among students in key areas such as cafeterias and in school policies.
