Jumpstart Jackson is a collaborative effort between the city of Jackson and the Jackson-Madison County School System to raise community awareness about childhood obesity, said Sandy MacDiarmid, superintendent of recreation for the city. The event was a 5K march for all ages, from Jackson Fairgrounds Park on South Highland Avenue to the West Tennessee Farmers Market downtown and back to the fairgrounds. Annette Wilson, coordinated school health administrator for the school system, said “Tennessee has one of the highest obesity rates among adults and children in the nation. Wilson said she encourages children to get out and with their families to make changes to their lifestyle and make exercise and nutrition a part of their daily routines. The trophy will be a traveling trophy, passed on to the next winning school at the end of each competition. Read Childhood Obesity
