A Marshall University nursing professor has chosen children in the Huntington area to participate in a research study on childhood obesity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, surveys conducted from 1976 to 1980 and from 2003 to 2006 show an increase in childhood obesity. Prunty said she chose the Boys and Girls Club because it is an after-school program she thought would be a good place to teach healthy lifestyles. Prunty said the research program had to be submitted to a committee of physicians who establish whether or not it is ethically and morally acceptable. Mary Kathryn Gould, associate dietetics professor, said children need to be more aware of what they eat and cut out foods such as cookies and soda.
